Do the benefits outweigh the risks? What would you do?

I am pregnant and I also have BiPolar disorder. I was diagnosed in January after trying to commit suicide in November and getting out of the hospital right before Christmas. I have since been on lithium, seroquel, and zoloft. Lithium has been known to cause severe heart defects in fetuses and also thyroid defects. Seroquel has been known to cause defects in pregnant animals but they dont have enough research from humans. I went to see my Psychiatrist because I have gone off my meds and wanted something safer. He told me to go back on them that the benefits to me outweigh the risks. I dont believe that the benefits outweigh what it could do to my unborn baby. Do you think I am right or wrong? What would you do? PLEASE HELP by giving me your opinions.

I also have bipolar and take Trazadone and Topamax, I quit taking them the day I found out I was pregnant! It isn't worth it to me, I know that the medicines are Class C and like you said the benefits could outweigh the risks, but in this case...I don't want to have to worry that the medicines I take could harm my unborn baby. I wouldn't want to have to think that something I took, hurt my baby. I have also tried to commit suicide, in 2001 I OD'd and was in the ICU for 2 days. This is a personal choice for you concerning the medicines. My sister took Zoloft while pregnant, it is one of the safer ones.

Good luck with whatever you choose, if you want to talk ever, you can email me.

I think that your doctor is right. I have had depression for over 5 years (I know BiPolor is different) and have been on Lexapro for about the same time. I am now pregnant with my second child and am still taking the meds. When I was pregnant with my first, I was told to stop taking them for at least the first 3 months, which I did, but refused to do for my second. Those three months that I was off my meds was extremely difficult. Normally I am not the type who would consider an abortion and when I first found out I was pregnant I was thrilled, but without the medication I no longer wanted the child and refused to leave my house. I think what your doctor is trying to say is that if your not completely (sorry this sounds bad) right in mind than the risk for your child is the same as if you were taking the meds. Good Luck!

Oh gosh what a position to be in.

Look around your town for the best obstetrician you can find and consult with him - he is an expert in babies and can help you decide what to do.

But no matter what if you go off the meds and then commit suicide- it won't help the baby at all. So you need to on some kind of meds to help you - hopefully this baby will give you the incentive to live, take your meds and have a good life.

I think I would be VERY concerned if I were you about the baby- I totally understand.

it is likewise a question I even have been asking myself these days. I additionally neutered my pup at 6 months, blindly questioning it grew to become into the final element to do by way of fact he grew to become right into a puppy. i'm no longer interior the situation the place I ought to make a call, yet when I do get my next pup, i will heavily be thinking no longer neutering. easily i'm leaning in the direction of no longer. i understand that i might properly be in charge adequate to circumvent matings and there is little to no earnings from neutering. I at the instant have a working canine who's intact. there is not any subject with habit or "unintended" matings. i've got self assurance it remains the wonderful determination for the final public of the inhabitants obtainable by way of fact many can not look to administration an intact canine, yet for those in charge adequate, I see no longer something incorrect with leaving a canine intact. i will nevertheless advise it finding on the situation. yet on each and every occasion a question approximately reward/hazards, I direct them to that hyperlink. Many at here will declare there are no longer any hazards and it extremely is extra healthy.

i personally wouldnt take even the smallest risk. i know that you might need those meds to stay healthy but it is your responsibility to keep the baby safe... would it possibly help to have counseling? maybe daily or something, also maybe a person you can call day or night when you are having bad feelings? i work with people who take those meds, so i know they are pretty heavy duty chemicals. try asking some different doctors, or pre natal specialists.

good luck and i hope it all goes well :)

Im sorry only you can make the decision and it would be best to discuss it with your doctor and speak about your fears for your unborn baby. They will offer the best advice as they willknow exactly what you can and cant take and what will or wont effect your baby. Good luck

I know someone that is going through that right now it is up to what you want to do if you want the baby then you have to do what you have to do to keep the baby and it be healthy so what I can say it is only 9 months to stop and just keep talking to people to keep you level you know thats all you can do and then when the baby comes then you can do what you have to....its all about choice...
