HDD and DVD at same location 0 (0)?

My hardrive and DVD writer are both listed at location 0 (0) in the device manager.I've tried uninstalling and letting Windows reinstall several times but nothing changes.CD's will play fine but it won't recognize any DVD's at all.I manually uninstalled the DVD writer from the PC but that changed nothing. My firmware is up to date,I installed new IDE cables-40 pin,80 wire, and that didn't help.Everything in the bios is set as it should be,switching the jumpers on the DVD writer from master to cable select didn't work. The HDD and the DVD writer are on separate cables so there is no conflict there.I uninstalled any and all software that might cause a problem, such as Nero and AnyDVD.Everything is as it should be but both are still listed at the same location. The DVD writer is a Samsung SH-162L,I'm running XP Home with SP2 installed.Any and all help will be greatly appreciated.

It's the DVD drive !! I had the exact same one and it was a piece of trash. If you search the tech forums you will see many issues with this drive. You must have got suckered into the same "GREAT" deal I was!!

  • Who are those people trying to be tech's.

The location is talking about the IDE interface on the Motherboard. Location 0 is from the primary if you have two or more or if there is only one then it will be 0 as will. If you have more then one drive plugged in to one IDE cable the location of either drive will that of the IDE channel you are using on the Motherboard.

You need a DVD playing program to play DVD. Having a DVD write drive does not mean that you will be able to play dvd's you need a program or a plugin for Windows Media Play so you can watch a DVD movie some like Power DVD 5 or high.

If CD's work fine, then DVD's should as well, unless the model is defective or has compatibility problems with the DVD media you are using. Try a few different brands of DVD, it could be picky with certain brands. If all else fails return it and try another model.

It sounds like the dvd might be broken. If you have a friend who would let you install the DVD in their computer to test it out, I would try that. Make sure the device is good. If it is, try making it a slave and putting it on the same cable as the HDD. (Is the HDD on cable select?)
