Mutts become hybrids?
As a kid a mixed breed dog was just that, or a mongrel but now they are hybrids or designer, WHY? Isn't a mutt still a mutt?

Yes, a mixed breed dog is still just a mutt. Someone, at one point in time apparently decided that if a mixed breed dog was given a new "breed name" that this is all that it would take to create a "new breed" and so they started naming their mixed breeds and charging more for them as a result.
The problem with this is that, these pups CANNOT BREED TRUE. Many of the recognized breeds we have today had other breeds blended into them to create the attributes that were wanted for the breed. However, this process took many years and many generations before it was a genetic trait that would breed true.
The club that registers hybrids is simply an agent that is complicit in making it possible for people to overcharge for their mixed breeds that cannot breed true. This is very unfortunate. Many years in the future, if multiple breeders do the same crosses, some of these designer breeds might eventually evolve into actual breeds, but at this time, they are NOT! At this time they are all still just mutts. -!-

Ask the guy that keeps posting the Foodle questions. People just don't want to believe that there dog is a mutt. tehy want to think that it's something more unique and special than everyone elses. Well I hate to dissappoint, but "hybrids" are a fad and with a fad comes overpopularity, so in turn you end up with a more often seen dog than those who own pure breds.
Maybe because this world has become so politically correct the term Mutt has been found to be derogitory, so hybrid or cross or mixing names together isn't so offensive. LOL

A mutt, is a mutt is a mutt, whatever they want to call it. A hybrid would be a mix of a dog and a wold. They are not that. A "designer" is Vera Wang, Chanel etc. They are not that either. That means what are we left with but a MUTT!
I love mutts. Can't stand those who intentionally breed them though!

Would I shun the dog? Seriously, who would have the kind of energy to do that. Anytime I get into a conversation with someone who tries to tell me their dog is a something-doodle, I always use a "poodle mix" retort. I certainly do not want them to believe I am as stupid as they are by legitimizing their fantasy. As long as my neighbors do not have mutant dogs that are a threat to my animals I really do not care what they have at the end of a lead. The term 'hybrid mutt" is redundant. Using the term "hybrid" is another way people try to legitimize a mutt as something special. A hybrid is correctly an animal that is the result of a cross outside of its species.

I know. People don't want 'mutts' anymore, they want 'designer dogs' - which are just mutts with a fancy name. The only way to make money out of breeding mutts is to give them posh labels and fob them off on some idiot for a ridiculously high price.

as far as I'm aware.....
A purebred/pedigree/KC reg dog is a type of dog with a standard. a breed. These dogs breed true for each generation.
a mix of two of these purebred dogs is a crossbreed.
a mix of more than two breeds is a mutt/mongrel/heinz 57.
a hybrid animal is a cross of two species eg lion x tiger or zebra x horse and they are usually sterile - two dogs even of different breeds are not hybrid they are the same species....
this new idea to 'big up' a mutt is stupid - the only real 'designer' dogs are purebreds - they were designed over years for a purpose and now breed true.

it takes 7 generations for a dog to be able to breed true to its name...that is 7 or so yrs...That means breed 2/3 or 4 breeds together and take there pups and breed with the same type mix, and so forth to get a 7 generation....when it becomes that you can go to a good kennel club like AKC and introduce this dog...Now it is all up to that kennel club to decide weather or not it is worthy enough to slap a registration on him to make true to breed....But that is a very long shot...some breeds stay mongrels even though they are 7 generation....it takes a worthy enough breed to breed true to its name....BYB slap designer names on them so they can only get rich...
i dont understand why some people will pay top dollar for a mutt when you can go to their local shelter and adopt the same type mutt.....I use to own a mutt, German shepherd / collie mix and he was the only dog I had to turn over to the ASPCA...I didnt want to but he was very aggressive to my kids...He just hated them and I know some dogs are not meant to be with kids..I worked at the ASPCA at the time so I know he went to a great home without kids...I met the new owners and all...now in the family is a pit mix lab and he he just wonderful...But that is all he is is a mix breed....
Hybrid doesn't mean a dog,,, no such thing, that label is for mixing things like a bob cat and a minx cat or a panther to a cheetah or a zebra to a giraffe....designer dogs is just a name that BYB came up with...
sorry but if i want to spend money on a dog i am going to buy a dog that is a chamion sire/dame breed...
Just like the cockapoo, I would have never mixed them genes together..First I like the poodle but they are not the chosen breed for me..Alot of them are ankle biters and also have alot af genetic problems becouse of all the inbreeding they do to make them so small, and the cocker is a wonderfull dog but also if not breed right will have a lot of gennetic proplems as well..so why mix them only to have a bad geneticlly breed dog..If you choise to breed dogs there is a lot involved then just slaping two dogs together...Not only for true to breed dogs but their gennetics is a major issue...that is why ther are so many dogs dieng of HD/ED, canser, heart failor, liver problems and so forth..The breeder just doesnt give a dam on what they breed...

Not that there is anything wrong with a mutt. The dog I have now is a mutt, and is the best, smartest, sweetest dog I've ever had.

Yup still a mutt! These people selling "yorki-poos" or whatever are just out for a quick buck! I don't support them and I always correct epole when they use those "cutesy" names. It's a mutt-mutt-mutt!

YES, it's still a mutt! =) Just something BYB slap on to a mutt to make it seem more appealing. They're just trying to sell their poorly bred mutts is all...And for outrageous prices!!
