Why do seemingly normal people not use spell checker or take the 30 seconds to reread their question?
I am not perfect and do NOT expect a person to have a perfect piece of writing! All I am asking is why does a person NOT take the time to make sure he or she does not seem 12 years old, like he or she is from another country or simply make an effort not to look like an idiot!?
In my opinion even grammatical errors are okay and acceptable by most; it is spelling that gets to people! You can have perfection everywhere in your writing but if you misspell even a couple of words it can turn someone’s opinion completely on you and judgments are made.
Hey, it is the principle of the matter folks! Yes, it is only Y!A! but people should have a little pride in the perception that they are giving to other people.
As a supervisor in a call center the primary communication source was through email and believe it or not even in a professional atmosphere folks are equally lax in their efforts to ensure they seem educated.
Louise- You have so much aggression and anger there. You turned a simple fun question into an effort to try and disgrace me and make me feel guilty! It seems to me that people really do care and make assumptions based on someone's grammatical and spelling skills. If someone asks a sincere question but ask it where it doesn't make sense or it has every other word or a number of words misspelled people are going to answer it differently than if they get the impression it is an educated asker.
I personally feel that they are afraid that they will look even worse if it appears that they TRIED to proofread and spell check but it still looks and sounds terrible! This is proof they don’t know what they are doing. Secondly there is the possibility that they sincerely feel that they are spelling EVERYTHING correctly and they do not need to spell check or proofread because they are just that good at what they are doing. Lastly, it is probably just plain laziness and a lack of effort. Those singularly or as a combination is what I think leads to the atrocious spelling and grammatical mistakes you see, not only in Yahoo, but in most venues of typed communication.

I completely agree. It makes me worry about the education level of kids in school today. And if it's done by adults then either use spell check or go out and buy yourself a damn dictionary.
Literacy and spelling are suffering a downfall these years. Blame it on schools or the computer or the mobile phone. Emailings and text messaging have turned the words into letters. I see stuff like r for are and 4 for for and 2 for to and b for be c for see and y for why, etc.
Call it laziness or just a coverup for a poor education level. When I see it in a question or answer sentence, I find it unacceptable.
I also am noticing a lot more phonics going on. I don't have many examples because I try to forget it as soon as I see it but you know what I mean. It's obvious that persons are finding it more and more difficult to pick up a book.
I try to have faith that these persons will just grow out of it someday when they are older but there are days when I just wonder about the future of our country and the world when we are left with a public that cannot read or write. These are the basics of communication. And we are only left with persons like Louise who feel that communication with the written word is only useful in English class otherwise you can write however you want to. Her attitude is completely wrong. In her world, you could pick up a book and the author could write words anyway they wanted to and it's up to you the reader to figure out what they are. I mean, it's not like the author is writing his book in English class or something.
