Typo or not?
I only go on Marriage & Divorce (to see if I can help answer questions), that's why I am asking my question here. I have noticed lately that some people substitute "then" for "than" e.g. Angelface just now...."we have been more like room mates then a couple for the past years...". At first I thought it was just a typo, but I am seeing it more and more. What gives? Are these all typos or are people changing the language, or are they just a bit ignor... didn't pay attention at school? Thanks everyone.
Thanks everyone - I hear what you are saying, it's just that I have not come across it elsewhere and wondered what is going on? Have I missed the next big thing?
Having said that, I DO find it annoying that poeppleee kant spallll - I feel spelling and punctuation is designed to make reading what someone is trying to say, easier. Oh, if only my English teacher from all those years ago, could heer..er,er..here..er..haer.....hear me now!! He wood..woud..would be amazed two/to/too. But HE was the one who made me stand outside the door for just about every class!!
Thanks again for your input. I think "busseysmom" put it best - How will they get by in business or job hunting without basic writing skills?
For those who got upset at the question - it was a question so I could find out what is going on, nothing more. Sorry if I hit a nerve.

People interchange "than" and "then" because they don't know the difference. Same with "your" and "you're", "to" and "too", etc. etc.
Most young people are so into texting that proper English is becoming obsolete. Who cares? They should! How will they get by in business or job hunting without basic writing skills? Lack of basic English skills shows a lack of education or apathy, or both.

I get exactly what you mean. I have always been good with grammar, spelling and punctuation, and it annoys me when people can't spell/use the right word! Perfect example - There/their/they're!
And I totally lose interest when I see people have abbreviated words, I don't even bother to read anymore when I see words like "idk" and "rlly". Is it that hard to type the whole word?
I get that some people aren't educated as well as others and that's fine, but when people are using a computer and there's spell check and online dictionaries, there's no excuse!

I totally agree with you, and JMO and only JMO, you did not hit a nerve, and I am a fan of your answers, and you are wonderful, it is so nice to see you on the board!!!
I am having problems not only with spelling, but my avatar, I see it on the Q and A page, but then when I go to answer a question, my avatar is blank and so is the person's avatar that is asking the question, and then everyone elses avatar is blank also.
One day it was fine, and the next day, mine and everyone elses avatars are blank, I am going nuts trying to find out why.
No, I did not take offensive to your question, what I am taking offensive to is the fact that I am trying to find out what is happening to everyones Avatars!!!!!

I'm in university & the biggest complaint my professors have is that I don't know how to properly use THEN and THAN. I actually just got feedback on this about 4 days ago, so it's weird to see your question on here.
I honesly thought about it, and couldn't remember being taught when to properly use the different ones. Maybe it's not about paying attention at school, but that they forgot to teach it that year =)
yahoo answers isn't about grammatical errors and correct grammar. I prefer the occassional mix-up of THEN and THAN compared to someone who writes "wat do u thnk? iz my boi friend cheetin on me or wat?"

Not knowing they made a mistake has a kind of innocence to it, but not caring...... that's what drives me nuts! Apathy!!
Good question by the way...it gave some of us a chance to vent about our pet peeve.

Sometimes it's a typo, especially if the person didn't use spell check and sometimes that typo becomes a habit if it's repeated.

It's those people who can't write worth a crap and then ask on yahoo answers "why does my husband/wife" think I can't spell" or something that bother me...
