How to get rid of ants?

Me and my husband have recently purchased a new house. It is an older house. I didn't notice Ants when we first moved in. Now I can't get rid of them. I keep all food and sweets ect cleaned up. I am mopping everyday now and cleaning all surfaces. I just mopped with bleach and I looked and there back. How do I get rid of them. We bought some kind of stuff you sprinkle around the outside of your house that they are supposed to eat. Then we bought some spray and sprayed it around the outside and the inside too. Help Me!!

Update:

I have a 15 month old so I can't use anything that she can find lying around.

I also have a 11 day old that has some breathing problems so nothing with harsh smells.

I am never gonna get rid of these stupid things.

Try a product called Terro. I purchased mine at a Walgreens store. You just put a few drops on an old lid, saucer whatever you would like to use. They will swarm it. It will be hard to curb the urge to kill them but some will die around what you put out but most will take back to nest. Mine were gone in a day. I also put around window sills and doors where they might gain entrance. Havent had the problem in 2 years now. Good Luck.

Call an exterminator. There may be a nest somewhere in or under the house and until you get rid of the queen, she'll just keep making new ants. My mom had problems with ants in a bathroom--they'd come in through the overflow drain attracted by the sweet smell of the soap mom used. Also, powdered boric acid or Borax (powdered soap) spread along the route the ants take is supposed to work on ants, roaches, other crawlies--they walk through it, it clings to their legs and parts, they lick themselves to clean it off and they die. If they go back to their nest before they clean themselves up, they spread it around the nest. But am exterminator is faster and will kill any other bugs taking advantage of the work the ants have been doing.

Yeah, Yeah , Yeah, We have been thru the same thing as well as calling a professional bug company last year and we never really got rid of all the ants. They are everywhere and they move from one room to the next. It's absolutely maddening.

Set out bait traps called taro from the hardware store. It's the same stuff the pros use and be diligent. Eventually you'll get rid of them before the Queen ant lays enough eggs for another ant invasion. This year they are worse than ever and they are called sugar ants in this neck of the woods. Little tiny specks all over the

    place. Good Luck

Last year I bought some 'ant stakes'...not sure of correct name....a "RAID" product...bought at Meijers. They were about 3 - 4 inches tall...stake part was green and top was white.

Put in ground around your home....with-in 5 -7 days ants are gone. We had them in kitchen (cabinets -counters)...both bathrooms...front den..WORKED!!!

The so called 'ant traps' and some other product you put on with a syringe type implement did not work...wasted money.

I kept looking for this product at Meijers, again about 4 months ago...no luck. Finally went to Lowes and found something similar about 4 weeks ago....was beginning to see ants at back door.

Lowes product wasn't Raid....forget what brand...but were 4 in a package for about $7.00....got 3 packages.....they are all green and about the same size as Raid's.

    Have NOT seen any ants....hoo-ray!!

I put extra around the kitchen area outside.

Instructions says to replace in 3 (4?) months.....I never replaced them last year....but not sure how long they were in the ground....but I'm sure it was longer than 3 - 4 months.

Wouldn't you know....2 weeks ago, at Meijers we found the RAID product. Too late.....got the other brand. If we waited....probably would have ants everywhere.

I hope you can find these 'stakes'.....they do work.

    Good Luck!

You may have a nest inside the house. Here is a remedy that has been used for years:

Mix 1 Tablespoon of Boric Acid, 1 tsp of Sugar, 4 oz water, saturate cotton balls with the solution and place in jar lids near areas you think the ants are coming from. Resaturate regularly so the cotton doesn't dry out.

The sugar attracts them and the boric acid kills them while being safe for humans and pets. ( Do place your "traps" away from curious animals.)

Sprinkle some chili pepper( crushed, like the kind that comes when you order pizza) around window seals and door frames and anywhere else you see a crack. You could also use fabric softener sheets. Kinda rub them along cracks. Or you could get some cornmeal. I haven't tried it yet(sure I'll get an chance though unfortunately) They're supposed to take it back to the colony and when they eat it it swells inside of them and they well you know. . . Boom! Good luck hope this helps!
