How do I wire a 12 volt reversible motor so it will go both ways with the flick of a switch?

I am rewiring a 12 volt car for my grandson and need to make it as easy as possible for him to work.I have it hooked up to a horn button on the floor for a gas pedal.(ON-OFF) I need to be able to reverse the cables so I can have forward and reverse. If possible I would like to hook it up to a switch.

You need to connect a DPDT switch to the power source.Google reversing switch for a layout.

You could use a reversing switch if you can find one, but this is more commonly accomplished with 2 relays and a single pole double throw switch. This is the same setup used on boat trim motors.

The foot switch should be a "momentary action" switch so that if you take your foot off it the car stops (just like the electric bumper cars at an amusement park). Then you add another Single Pole Double Throw (SPDT) switch in series with it that selects forward or reverse.

Yep you can do as Anthony has said.

But run a 3 way switch in between the power switch this will give you 2 extra directions, mount it near or even on the steering wheel.
