Each of the European Powers, especially Britain and Germany, had developed massively because of their Industrial Revolutions and each thought that this was the opportunity for them to exert their influence over Europe. The alliances that they had formed (Britain, France, Russia V Germany, Austria-Hungary, Turkey) meant that if any one of the countries were attacked, the others would be dragged into the conflict. The trigger that started it was the assassination of the Austrian Archduke Franz Ferdinand by a Serb nationalist (Serbia was an ally of Russia).
