The word ultimately derives from the Latin verb "constituo," which means to put, set or place; appoint; decree, decide; to fix or establish; to agree upon. There are related word in Latin, such as "constitutio," a feminine noun which means constitution, disposition; ordering; arrangement; or ordinance, and "constitutum," a neuter noun which means institution, law; agreement, or compact, but these both derive from the verb "constituo." Hence, a Constitution is an agreed upon document, which "establishes" the basis by which a consenting people shall govern themselves.
