Do you think tipping in restaurants/bars is becoming too expected by servers?

Here are my thoughts.

Firstly, I think a tip should be left at the discretion of the customer -- if he/she receives outstanding service, then give a nice tip. If the service sucked, a small tip at best, no tip at worst. In short, a tip should be earned, not expected.

Secondly, I think they should scrap the low wage restaurants/bars pay staff. It's ridiculous that servers can make as little as $2.50/hour. But I also think it's equally stupid -- and a bit ballsy -- of establishment owners to expect the customer to pick up the slack because they're being cheapskates.

ATTN OWNERS: Pay servers a good wage and stop expecting we the customers to subsidize their earnings. We're already paying enough to dine/drink in your establishment.

I only write this because I think the situation is getting out of hand.

I agree with you! I mean I am very grateful of servers who do a good job and I try not to make their job harder than it is, but I hate when they just expect a tip. (Dont count your chickens before they hatch!) I tip at least 15% for good service and have been known to go over 20% if the service was great and I can afford it.

I see servers in the "dining out-Other" catagory that just rip into the customers and are now saying that 20% is minimum! They say this because cost of living has gone up. Well it has, so has the cost of food therefore making your tip more as well so 15% is still standard! Times are hard for everyone not just the servers!

They also say if someone doesnt have enough money to tip that they shouldnt go out to eat! Thats bull, we have a right to be happy and go out to dinner if we feel like it, if we can pay for our bill than thats all that really matters!

Its just rude what a lot of servers say about their customers, I agree with some common things like not letting your kid run wild in the resturant and such but they seem to be on a high horse and dont seem to understand that we arent forcing them to be servers, go do another job then!

And yes I do understand that your job is hard! I wouldnt want to do that job in a million years but that doesnt mean that you automatically get a tip!

Source(s): I enjoy going out to dinner and am kind and tip well for good service.

I do agree with you but as long as servers/waiters/bartenders are part of the service industries they will be underpaid. The owners will not pay them top wages. When you think about it tipping 15 to 20 percent is not that bad....especially considering that they are performing a service and usually quite well. If you do get bad service, then simply either tip low or do not tip at all. I've been known to leave a tip of one cent if service is horrid. But remember, as long as it is a service related industry, and they are underpaid we are more or less forced to tip.....and remember, if you come back, they will more than likely remember you for a decent tip!!!

I understand what you are saying, but....

DO YOU UNDERSTAND that if the restaurant had to pay the servers more, the price of food would skyrocket?

Plus, do you think that servers would care AT ALL about your experience at the restaurant??

You think you get bad service now....wait until the servers aren't working for a tip....

    Source(s): trust me

I agree. Most people will look down on you if you don't leave a tip, but again, like you said a tip should be earned and is not a requirement.

I agree with you, but it's not so easy to change a system like this. Congress would have to act, and waiters would have to organize in order to make sure that their total income doesn't drop. And restaurants would raise their prices, so for customers, it wouldn't make much difference.
