I don't understand why the U.S. helped BOTH Iraq AND Iran during the First Gulf War?

Most of Iran's military equipment (aircrafts) and arsenal was American-made.

And even though Iraq's equipment came from the Soviet Union, the US still sold Iraq $200 million worth of helicopters...

But it's not just the US, many countries supported both Iraq and Iran. Why is that? Was the Iraq-Iran War an amusing game of ping pong for the rest of the world? It's a question about life and death, especially of the civilians and especially when Saddam introduced chemical warfare in the '88 war...

First of the first gulf war was between the U.S. (also U.N.) against Iraq because Iraq invaded Kuwait all we did was take back Kuwait and give it back to the people of Kuwait. We have been hopping back and forth we armed and trained OSAMA BIN LADEN to fight off the soviets in Afghanistan. And at some point after being close with Iran for so many years we wanted a regime change in Iran so we sold Iraq a bunch of weapons including alot of the chemical weapons that we went in to find as the basis for this newest war along with tanks and helicopters. i dont understand it either but i do know the world doesnt need a police force and it damn well shouldn't be us because we are horrible at it. HORRIBLE

    Allow to me help.

    1. The First Gulf War was when Saddam invaded Kuwait and the USA formed a coalition to boot him out and we did. What you are trying to allude to is the Iran/Iraq war. Which, if you had been educated would know that we gave nada, zip to Iran cause by then the Sha had been kicked out by the radical islamists. Thats why we supported Saddam with 155 shells and such, if you would take the time to put down the propaganda and read a real history you can learn that almost all the materials fro making poison gas came from FRANCE, Russia and Germany

The story with Iran and Iraq started in 1918, when the USA was the triumphant winner of WW1, the war to end all wars.

Woodrow Wilson, an arrogant nut, had the opportunity to reshape the world political maps, to further peace.

Instead, he didn't took the time and listened to the wrong advisers, creating many future conflicts, drawing wildly borders for countries, without a second thought.

It's quit interesting, but a long story.

After WW2, which was provoked by Wilson's stupid decisions, the USA and its Allies had another chance at world peace and messed that up again.

The only thing they did right this time was, they let Germany have their dignity and let them rebuild, which they didn't after WW1.

I'm fairly certain the U.S. sold equipment to groups of people in the region for our own gain. That is, we were wanting to keep the USSR from invading the area, like in Afghanistan. The USSR, and now Russia, was looking for money.

We sold the Iranians F-14 Tomcats a while back. The only problem is that we purposely removed the firing and arming mechanisms so they cannot be used to drop bombs or fire missiles. So, all the aircraft can do is fly. Since the U.S. retired the F-14, we have to be very careful about the Iranians getting any of the equipment.

It was called the Iran-Contra affair. Ronald Reagan sold weapons to the Iranians in the 1980's so he could raise money to support the Contra guerrillas in Nicaragua. He did this while at the same time supporting Saddam Hussein in his war against the (at that time) new Islamic government of Iran.

    War is good business.

We sell them 2nd grade equipment which boosts our economy at that time, which then gives us reason to upgrade and invest more money into our equipment. Endless cycle.
