A Cold War involves mostly political and covert operations. Like the US suppling Afghanistan with weapons during the Soviet Invasion.

A hot war involves military operations like WW2, Korea, and Vietnam.

a cold war is playing in the offices of the politicians and president and it is only a diplomatic conflict without weapons. It can be based upon economical and ideological strategies.

A "warm" war is a real war, with fights, army, weapons, and so on.
