Why was 1844 a big turning point year for Africa?

What got started and which areas and who was involved? Did something "release" so that this could happen?

1844 was a big turning point year in Africa because it marked the start of European imperialism in the continent. The lives of Africans would never be the same. All African nations but Liberia and Ethiopia were carved out and put under European control.

The big European players were England, France, Germany, and Italy. Nothing really released, rather during this age, European nations began to set out to conquer Africa and lands elsewhere to become more powerful.

    hope this helps.
