How much is too much food for guinea pig?

I recently adopted 2 guinea pigs from the local shelter. A mom @10 months and her daughter @6months.

They have access to hay and water all day. I have a dish with high quality pellets also. They are fed 2x a day fresh veggies(their favorites are romaine lettuce, cilatro and carrots). I'm trying to determine how much of the greens to to give them- they are eating machines! At each feeding they are getting about 4 leaves of romaine, 6 baby carrots and handful of cilantro. It looks to be about 2 cups total at each feeding. Is this enough? too much? They always are ready for more, but I dont want them to eat too much and be unhealthy.

Update:

Just to clarify: if they share equally, they EACH get about 1 cup in the am, and 1 cup in the pm

Kudos to you for adopting the girls. They're not going to overeat, so don't worry about it. However, you might want to change up how you're feeding them so it's not always the same thing. Instead of giving them the 3 things twice a day - which is fine - give them 1 thing in the morning, and another thing for their dinner, or whenever it is you're feeding them. In other words, one meal give them some romaine, another meal give them some cilantro. Another meal you can give them some carrots, or you can give them a few carrots with the romaine or cilantro. There's also other fruits and veggies you can feed them for even more variety. Mine loves a nice salad of romaine with some chopped tomato. I also feed parsley and sliced celery. You can do green leaf, or red leaf lettuce, and kale or spinach (not daily on the kale and spinach though). If you're making a salad, or have the salad fixings in the house, give some to the girls - just don't give them iceberg lettuce - and don't overdo gassy foods which will make them bloated and uncomfortable.

I'm sorry but i have to say yes it is to much, but your giving them 2 serves a day which is what everyone should be doing if they have guinea pigs.

Don't give them lettuce, it's bad for them and it hypes them up a bit.

You should give them 1 cup and a half for the day, so half that and you'll be right.

In stead of giving them 4 full baby carrots just peal 2-1 baby carrots for the day (Am and Pm)

Hopfuly that reduces your guinea pigs whants to what you think is normal,

    but remember no-ones normal : )

    http://www.mgpr.org/MGPR/Guinea%20Pig%20Diet.htm

This site gives # of stocks of cilantro, # of lettuce leaves, etc. In general, under 6 months gets unlimited pellets, over 6 months gets about 1/4 cup pellets daily, and everyone gets unlimited hay and water.

they are probably malnourshied. good for you for adopting guinea pigs of all creatures! think of it this way, have you ever known any living organism to get obese or die from eating too much fruits and veggies? No. I didn't think so. Go ahead and feed them all the greens they want.

however, you may want to determine how many pellets servings they get, since that is "processed"

I know what you mean! When I got my guinea pigs, I was surprised, too--they ate non-stop (maybe they didn't have enough to eat before?)! But I didn't want to starve them. I think your guinea pigs are fine though, and they're smart enough to know how much is too much. Now, my guinea pigs only eat when necessary, so their diet seems a lot more normal now. Greens are good, your guinea pigs must be eating in paradise ;D Have fun!

you need to give them 1 cup instead of 2.if you give the 1 cup they will live longer.

well I know if you feed them less(cut the servings in half) they will live longer I have no back up info but I recently saw a discovery show about the human body and they said if you starve yourself a little you live longer and it was affective on small animals too.

i think you should give them about two tsp.per guinea pig so about 4 tsp.
