Does no one else think it's a bit racist to throw a "white trash party"?

I got a violation for telling someone that I thought their idea was trashy. I'm not upset about. I deserved it because I didn't answer their question.

I'm just wondering, does no one else see anything wrong with a "white trash party"? I mean, If I (white female) wanted to throw a "black ghetto party" and asked what to serve people on here would be jumping all over me for making fun of a race of people.

I just think it's 2008, it's time to stop judging people by their skin color, their gender, how much money they do or don't have, where they live, what they drive, what job they do, and anything else people get judged for. There's no need to throw parties calling attention to different lifestyles.

Update:

catthbr - I have no idea what it is either. The first time I heard of one was when I tried to answer the question.

I guess part of my problem with a party like this is that they would basically be making fun of poor people. Maybe racist wasn't the right word. Maybe I should have just said discriminatory? I don't know. I just don't think it's right to throw a party where you make fun of a group of people for how they live.

    Is "white trash" a theme?

I am not trying to be funny or racist either.

What do you wear to a "White Trash Party"? What music is played?

I have seen "hot ghetto mess" (or some similarly named) theme party where people dress as thug or as hoochie as possible.

There are parties where you go dressed "Goth-like"

"Oldies-but-Goodies" where you dress like in the movie/play Hairspray, even "Disco Fever" where the theme is like Sat. Night Fever. Don't forget the 80s house party or 90s grunge.

Since I don't know what it is nor have ever heard of such a thing I would like to think that it is a party where you are like those people on Blue Collar TV (get'er done). People may see this type of party as racist since "white trash" kinda refers to one type of people. I mean can East Indians, Asians, Hispanics, The French, The English attend such a party.

Anyone can attend the parties I mentioned above - it doesn't matter.

Maybe everyone should just have A party - play reggaeton, reggae, R&B, house, techno, bachata, salsa, merengue and whatever else! Everyone can come, with good food, good music, dance and have fun!!

    !!WEPA!!

That's exactly what it means. The "White Trash" are throwaways of the White race. You are one of a few people who gets it. I always find it hilarious when I hear non-Whites throwing that term around.

A White Trash party? Haha, I actually think that's kinda funny! Not that'd I'd ever have one, because it's not a very classy thing to do. But racist? How is that racist? It isn't making fun of someone's race; it's making fun of how a certain group of people act. It'd be the same as having a "Nerd" party, or a "Yuppie" party. It has nothing to do with race. Sure, it's not very nice to make fun of someone for any reason... but why does everything have to be considered racist? I'm gonna throw an "Anti-Racist" party. Everyone has to sit there and do absolutely nothing... because anything anyone says or does might be considered racist!

I think the people throwing a "white trash party" believe that they are so sophisticated and tasteful that no one would ever dream of calling them white trash. I wonder just how accurate that assessment of themselves really is, don't you?

Perhaps someone should throw a "bourgeois moron" party and don the apparel and dialect of a certain quite obnoxious portion of our population.

I think people are way too sensitive these days. I hate having to walk on eggshells to avoid offending someone by committing the latest perceived slight. That said, a party theme based on 'white trash' or 'ghetto' sounds kinda dumb to me.

Don't feel too bad, I got my answer hidden and the asker has attached me to her contact list now like a damn virus. It just infuriates me to see the word "trash" attached to any group of people including white. No group of human beings should be categorized as trash with the exception of those who can't think of better themes for their parties except racially or socio-economically motivated ones.

i am all for themed parties but wouldnt it be appropriate to be a "trashy party" and leave the white off bc its offensive to me. I do not consider myself white trash but there are people who fit that stereo type. But I am not comfortable being grouped in with those people. Everyone is unique and different and shouldnt be lumped together.

I believe the rule is if you are the same/act the same/look the same as the people that you are making fun of is o.k.

Personally I don't mind for someone w/my same beliefs/looks/gender to say little joke about me or my circle.

I really don't think this person meant to insult any one specially if she is having a party for them.

  • No one is white trash for being white. No one is white trash for living in the country.

White trash are the kind of people who don't work, suck off the government programs that are paid for by decent, hardworking taxpayers like you and me, and spend that money on beer, NASCAR collectibles, and cars.

There's nothing wrong with having a theme party making of the people who waste our taxes on their own laziness, when there are people out there who genuinely need it and can't get it. Those people are dishonest leeches who deserve whatever they get.

Edit: No, Katie. I have redneck friends. You must live in the city, because those of us in the country know the difference between country, redneck, and white trash. Rednecks WORK. They pay bills. They support their country.
