How tall are the trees in Texas?

A friend moved here to Virginia from Texas, and looked up all the time. When asked why, he said that he never saw such tall trees. Is this true?

Update:

He was talking about the loblolly pines that are behind his house here.

We'll your friend was right, most trees in Texas are 20 or 30 feet! But, in East Texas there are some very big trees! And of course California has some of the biggest! (trees)

Actually it depends on who is describing how big anything in Texas. If it's a native Texan telling it Texas has the biggest and best of anything you could want. If it's someone who moved here from somewhere else, you'll get closer to the actual facts. That being said, as far as trees it depends what part of Texas your in. I'm in Houston and we have some pretty large trees, out toward the desert they are smaller. BUT, you want tall trees and old trees and take your breath away trees California is the place to go. The redwoods and the Sequoia's are the tallest and oldest trees known. Some of them are so tall they provide benches with the backs adjusted so you can lay back because that's the only way to see the tops.

She cant be talking about the panhandle of Texas lol

I lived there for many years and the only thing there is dust!

The trees have been strategically planted to form a shelter belt for the top soil

Here in East Texas we have the tall pine trees that are beautiful.

In the valley there are palms

and the Houston area has chemically enhanced deformed trees. Man I miss Houston

Texas is a big place with lots of different landscapes. In East Texas there are tall pines. . .and in the Piney Woods. And in the north there are all the usual deciduous trees. To the west there is desert and then the hill country with Ozark looking hills and here in south Texas the trees are all knarled and twisted from the sun like the mesquite and ebony. While we have a few salt cedars and palm trees(very tall) the native trees are usually pretty short. You have to remember that it is 1200 miles from Dalhart in the north to Brownsville in the south with a lot of Texas in between.

A lot of places in Texas have no trees at all, or only shorter, desert trees. It depends on where in Texas your friend lived, as it's a huge state. I'm sure they have taller trees in the forest somewhere, but perhaps not where your friend lived. Look up some pictures of the desert, and you will see what I mean.

Loblolly pines get very tall 110' to 120' and beyond. Had them in North Carolina--they also drop branches all the time and pine cones and needles and are a real pain in the 'lolly'. They plant forests of them to harvest for pulp because they grow so fast and have few lower branches to saw off and waste.

In Texas the trees go all the way to the top.

I live in California and I'll see your lob lolly and raise you a giant Sequoia.

Your friend should visit the redwoods or sequoia trees in California. They are probably the tallest in the world and also the oldest. They have been around for over 2000 years.
