What kind of frosting works best for a cupcake cake?

I made a cupcake cake for my child's birthday using regular store bought frosting. It wasn't thick or sturdy enough to span the gaps between the cupcakes and we had "sinkholes". What kind of frosting would work best?

the bakery I paintings at makes use of thier own buttercream for kind truffles that are displayed on the once a year wedding ceremony tutor and then the truffles are displayed interior the shop for a whole year. The frosting drys very annoying. of direction, it is going to smash easily then besides so do no longer bounce your kind around lots after that's dry. It does not mould or something because of the fact the sugar is a preservative, basically like salt is. It gets loopy annoying nevertheless.
