Not Digesting?

My cat stays in the garage at night and he has a clean litter box. But he poops outside the litter box behind the car. I also saw pieces of cat food and grass in the poop. I also saw that he was digging in his litter box but when I used a scooper I found nothing. Is my cat not digesting well? What do I do? I didn't change the brand for the litter either. Help! Thanx!

Update:

I always keep his litter box clean. I have carpet in the garage because when he comes inside he always likes to sleep on the carpet. He likes using the car tires as a scratch post.

Update 2:

Yeah the litter box is close to his food bowl so maybe I need to move the litter box.

If you are sure it is not the litter. Try putting the cat and the box in a more confined space for a couple of days, Like a large kennel. Cats don't like to lay where they have pooped. You can slowly start letting the cat out. Cats generally like a small dark place to go to the bathroom. Hope it helps.

Fist, do you have a soft, warm place for the cat to sleep? If you expect him to sleep on the garage floor, it could well be that he is using his litter box as his bed, and cats won't go in their beds. Is he urinating in it? Also, it needs to be kept clean, daily. Most cats won't use a dirty box, and poo is very dirty.

Sounds like the litter box has become his bed and his scratching post, and the garage is everything else. Get him a scratching post and nice bed and see what happens.
