Is it normal to have older kids wear a "just in case" diaper on long car trips?

If a kid is like five or six years old and is trained is it normal if she wears a diaper or pull up on long trips?

No way. They would be so embarrassed.

Safe driving practices dictate that you should stop for a 15 minute break every 2 hours anyway.

This prevents driver fatigue, deep vein thrombosis and holding onto urine, which could lead to bladder infections.

You should ALL be stopping frequently for a break.

Don't let the macho driver let you otherwise.

    Older Kids In Diaper

If the child is not dry at night and you expect to be driving at a time when your child will be sleeping for a long period of time, then I would stop somewhere before "bedtime" to change into pygamas and put on whatever your child usually wears at night (nighttime pull-up or something).

However, if your child is toilet trained and does not wet the bed regularly, then it is not normal to put them into diapers. You need to plan more time for toilet stops when travelling with kids. Get everyone to go to the bathroom at every stop to avoid unnecessary extra stops. Also keep toilet paper and plastic bags in the car in case you need to make an emergency stop at the side of the road somewhere where there aren't any toilet facilities.

No you shouldn't. If you need the bathroom pull over and find a toilet. Wearing diapers at the age is like going back on potty training

No if your child is potty trained they should not be wearing diapers or pull-ups at anytime. This is too confusing for them, they will not understand why most times they have to go in the toilet and other times they can pee in the diaper. You just have to be prepared to pull over many times and possibly give less liquid. They do have travel potty's so you can just pull to the side of the road, or freeway. Then you don't constantly have to go inside places to use the restroom.

Not unless they still have accidents. My son just turned 5 and still has an accident sometimes so if I were going on a long trip and I didn't know how often we'd be ablet o stop I might put one on him just in case, as a last resort to protect his carseat. I'd rather avoid it and make frequent stops though because that could be kind of embarassing for him at that age.

  • No...My 3 year old says "Mommy I have to go potty" then we pull over and he goes at the next rest area....I think putting a pull up or diaper on an already trained child is an insult to that child.

5 or 6 years old? No.

Stop and go to the restroom. Like you would if you needed to go. I'd hope you wouldn't be wearing diapers on long trips "just in case".

I don't. The first road trip we took with my boys (all 3 when they were 3 years old). I brought Pull-Ups incase it became a problem, but they told me every time they needed to go, and whenever one went, I made she the others tried.

No! Do you wear one? Then why would any trained kid?

By five or six, any kids without medical issues should be more than capable of saying when he/she needs to pee and holding on until you reach an appropriate place to stop.

Source(s): I never put a nappy on my kids in the car once they were trained - and I always said to them that if they HAD to go on the motorway then it was tough, I would not stop on the hard shoulder because it was so dangerous, they had to wait until the next services or exit. Neither of them ever had an accident.
