Is it my Thermostat or my air conditioner?

My air conditioner only blwing out ho air. When I turn it on the air i like room temp then just gets warmer. When I turn it off it stays on blowing out air. Theonly way to get it to turn off is flipping the circuit breaker. I cleaed my air conditioner th eother day hoping tha was the problem, but didnt help. Could it be my thermostat is not working or is it a problem wiht my air conditoner its self? If its the thermostat, plz give ideas on how to change or fix it.

Update:

With the circuit breaker turned off i slid the theremostat up and down and did hear a click. But the thing that is now baffling me is even tho the circuit breaker was off when I turn the switch to cool i can hear a buzzing sound. Just thought this my help with finding an answer t my question.

sounds like it's operating in heat mode. you should have a "heat" and "cool" switch on your thermostat.

You've described several different problems with you system. When you turn the a/c on the indoor fan works but the evaporator coil is not getting cold, so the condenser needs repair. The condenser may need 1) a new fan motor 2) a new compressor 3) refrigerant 4) a capacitor 5) relay 6) contactor 7) other. There is a time delay that runs the fan for several minutes after you turn off the fan to extract all the cooling it can. When you turn off the breakers you are turning off the condenser only and not the furnace and the furnace has the controll transformer and indoor fan relay, hence the noise. The two most common condenser failures are fan motor and compressor capacitor. You need professional service. Sound like fun. Good luck.

It doesn't sound like a t-stat problem. There may be more than 1 problem. First is the outside unit is not functioning properly. 2nd is the TDR (temp. delay relay) May be set too low. Check to see if the outside unit starts when you lower the temp at the stat and the unit is on cool. If the fan outside runs feel the larger of the 2 copper pipes to see if it is getting cold. If not you have a compressor or freon problem

The TDR is located on the furnace and can be manually adjusted if you can find it, The problem may fix itself when you get the outside unit running correctly. Good luck and God Bless.

It sounds to me like it's indeed the thermostat. You A/C on/off switch is on it, right? The first thing to do is clean and adjust it. The link below will give you the details.

If this doesn't fix the problem, just install a new one.

U need a qualify Tech to take care of that problem. U don't have the tools to do the job. Because by the time u buy all the needed tools. It's cheaper to just call the A/C serviceman.

By the way, it's ur A/C.

I don't believe this question can be answered online.

It seems way too complicated a situation for anyone here to give you adequate answers without actually seeing the situation firsthand. I'd call your local HVAC guys and see if they can give it a look.

on the side of the thermo it says auto /manual .make sure its on auto.although this wont fix the hot air problem it will fix the circut breaker problem.

sounds like you are low on refrigerant, which will need a PRO to come over and check it out and re-fill.
