Tattoo design?
What's good tattoo design to have on your hip. I've been wanting to get one done for ages and I'll probably get a butterfly... I still need to have a proper think and look around. What other designs are good for that area?
I wanted to incorporate 3 initials onto the tattoo (of 3 very special people) "L", "E" and "R", where do you think would be best ... incorporate into tattoo outline, letters inside design, outside design, etc... I want the letters to look subtle and not very obvious
I know it's an individual thing, but I just wanted to see what everyone thought.
Thank you everyone, and esp beta and laura... you've given me some great advice
Benji, when I'm 65 I won't be wearing bikini bottoms or low rise jeans (i hope!)so my tattoo will probably be well tucked under a big flowery skirt :)

The best tattoo design is the one *you* spend the time, effort, and footwork conceiving and developing. None of us Y!A flunkies can tell you what to get because we don't know anything about you besides the fact that you like butterflies. There must be more that makes you a unique, creative, interesting woman than just that.
As far as your artwork goes, I would suggest doing a bit of footwork and taking the time to make it really special. Don't just get something because it is "cute" and "feminine" or "trendy." If you do, you are just asking for serious regret in a few months or years down the road when you ask yourself, "Why did I get that tribal butterfly?" It is much more productive and personal to get off the internet and put in the extra effort anyway, I promise.
Go to some tattoo studios and look through portfolios just to get ideas (this will help you find an artist you like as well). Go to a bookstore and geek out on art books, graphic novels, botany books, old lithographs, whatever inspires you. Brainstorm about people and things and books and poems that mean something to you.
Once you have some ideas, find an artist who is trustworthy, works in a clean environment with an autoclave system, and whose style you like, and schedule a consultation with that artist. Consults are always free. Tell him/her your ideas, show pictures, what ever inspires you, and together you'll be able to design a unique tattoo that will be perfect for you. If butterflies end up being at the top of that list as meaningful and creative, then awesome. Get a butterfly and don't let anyone bully you out of it. If not, though, I bet you'll find something better than you could have imagined just sitting here on Y!A.
Best of luck, love!

I think incorporated in the wings somewhere if you are going for subtle. Talk to your artist, maybe they can be black initials with color swirled over top.
....not quite sure if they could work something like that out....I'm not an artist.....but if you want something complicated with hidden details in the subtle nuances your artist choice is the key. Browse portfolios, and talk about your ideas with different artists. Pick the artist first.....then work out the details of the exact design.
If you want a butterfly, don't let the self righteous haters talk you out of it. Granted, thousands of women have butterfly tattoos, but if you take your time, and make yours what you want.....there will only be one butterfly tattoo like yours.
Taking plenty of time in the planning stage is the best way to end up with a beautiful tattoo that you will love for the rest of your life.

I hate people who just pick a generic design for a tattoo, its called "flash art". I think it should have meaning and be original, your going to see hundreds of girls with butterfly tattoos just like yours

Red rose with stars around it.
Your star sign.
Your name and middle name if you have one.
Your date of birth.
Your kids initials if you have any.
Your initials.
A good quote, Or something like 100% B-i-t-c-h, Pink princess, Punk rocker, I love life, Poser, something like that.
Your favourite band / singer / their symbols.
Someone famous that you like for example, Marilyn Monroe, Johnny depp etc.
A blue eye with eyeliner on top, That would look pretty.
Hope i helped x

curly letters will look nice inside the design (thinking of butterfly), or around if your going to have flowers with vines.
