How do I get a Nonprofit Job without a Masters?

I have a BA in English but I am fluent in foreign languages and have spent a year living and working in Kenya. I have strong writing skills and other skills, but keep finding that places want someone with a MA. Is there any way to get around this?

For overseas work with nonprofits, indeed, a Master's is required. But there are jobs at nonprofits that are based locally that don't require a Master's -- most jobs that don't require a Master's at large nonprofits are not senior level, but it's possible to work your way up. Jobs such as communications assistant/associate, program assistant/associate, etc. don't require a Master's degree.

You don't say what it is you can really *do*. And you don't say where you are. My advice is based on the USA, but you can apply it to just about anywhere.

You say you are fluent in foreign languages, but you don't say which one. Also, unless you have a parent that was a native speaker in a particular language, you have to get accreditation as proof of your fluency. For instance, for Spanish, that's the DELE. French has a similar certification.

Your resume needs to reflect your skills. Have you managed a program or project? Have you supervised other people? Have you worked directly with the public? Have you worked in crisis situations? Do you have samples of your writing? What software can you use? Have you managed a budget? Have you done presentations? Do you have excellent references? All of this needs to be detailed in your resume.

While looking for a job, you should be volunteering, in order to further build up your skills and to make contacts that can lead to jobs.

It is not necessary to have a master degree to have a nonprofit job. You have to have experience in that field. The International organisation like UN don't look for Master Degree but they look for interest and the experience you have in work. Even a Secondary School Passed People have being doing non profit jobs.

That is interesting because all of the Non-Profits I have worked for, Red Cross, United Way cannot afford a person with a Masters on the payroll....You do not say what type of jobs your are applying for. My guess is something way up at the top.....If they require the Masters, there is no skirting around it!
