Spreading vs Esoteric knowledge?

A wise man said "The best one amongst you is the one who obtains knowledge and teachs it to others"

Recently, the words esoteric knowledge have been poping up in my current readings and I am wondering:

1. Should certain type of knowledge be in anyway esoteric?

2. Certain type of knowledge may be dangerous, some would say, but don't I have the right to decide for myself whether or not it is dangerous to me?

3. What is your say of the above quotation and the sayer ansd who is he?

The wise men believed that spreading knowledge does good only, or does both good and harm but good outweighs harm.

    Dictionary meaning of esoteric -

    1. understood by or meant for only the select few who have special knowledge or interest; recondite: poetry full of esoteric allusions.

    2. belonging to the select few.

    3. private; secret; confidential.

    4. (of a philosophical doctrine or the like) intended to be revealed only to the initiates of a group: the esoteric doctrines of Pythagoras.

Keeping knowledge from unleashing could be both good idea and a bad idea as certain knowledge can benefit the society, ie only selected few know this theory, but cannot utilize it, but its likely that some other person(un-selected) can, since there will be a whole lot of intelligent people who are not 'chosen'. But if it is bad, its likely that it will cause chaos.

    1. Should certain type of knowledge be in anyway esoteric. I believe everyone deserve to know truth, but if the truth does more harm than good to people, i reckon it should be hidden.

    2. Something 'dangerous' should not be 'decided', with that reasoning i can say that king cobra is not dangerous to me. If something is potentially dangerous, then that is 'considered' dangerous not 'decided' to be dangerous. And you cannot have an opinion without knowing the subject, your question should be: dont i have the right to look?

    3. I do not know the sayer, and i answered this question in my first paragraph.

    1. Esoteric means "inner" knowledge, so yes, knowledge is esoteric, even when coming from outside (exoteric) being that it is understood from an "inner" interpretation.

    2. You can choose WHAT "knowledge" you wish to know at any given time, but the curriculum is already complete..you only have choices.

    3. IKN who said the quote, my say is everyone is a teacher, everyone has some "knowledge" making all of us equal from that perspective.

When I left College, I thought as you do:

That all knowledge should be free to all.

That sequestering it is a crime, and diminishes

the general freedom by denying useful tools.

Then I went out into the world and met the general public.

I had to design for 'public safety'.

I had to allow for the most foolish action possible,

knowing it would sooner or later occur.

I still believe with St Augustine that:

"That which is not diminished by sharing

is not properly owned unless it is shared."

But I would not offer 'dangerous` information without

    restriction.

There are just too many fools out there.

“One of the best alms is learning knowledge then teaching to his brother.”Mohajjat ul baiza v : 1 ; p : 22

There are others, the concept isn't unique.

Some teaching may be best kept for people who are more ready for it than others.

If it's so dangerous and secretive I'd be skeptical of it's truth and authenticity
