Having trouble getting sand into the Hayward Sand Filter?
Above ground pool sand filter, model s166t. My husband is going nuts!! The problem is the legs that have to stay open, then how can you fill the tank with sand? Then when you get it filled it's hard to push it down through all that sand? It's impossible!!

The legs close down on swivel or screw in depending on the pickup unit. this goes in first. I think you got that.
Set it in the mounting hole make sure it is flush. If this is a new unit, check for fit, you likely will have to cut to fit pipe to head unit. Cover the pipe with a top off a spray can of some sort so sand does not go down the tube. Fill tank with sand.
Put head unit on making sure it is flush with the top and line up hoses or pipes where they need to be. Put the holders on both sides as far as you can by hand, then bolt down evenly. Let fill with water and check for leeks before plugging in. Plug in and turn to rinse. Check for leeks. then set on filter and go.

The filter tube should be adjustable and just don't lower it to far and the sand should not be a problem. And i personally have never used sand but i think it would be a little more challenging to clean because of how fine it is compared to gravel hope i helped a little.
