Name one thing the federal government has done right.?

Voting for McCain or Obama will ultimately provide a much larger government and, therefore, less personal freedom. There are very few instances of the government relinquishing any amount of power once it is acquired. Why is this better than a free market? Please explain your answer.

The biggest source of government oppression is the state governments. The federal government desegregated schools, abolished racial, religious, and sex discrimination in housing, hiring, and provision of government services.

If you think the state governments do a better job of safeguarding your freedoms than the federal government, then you must be a wealthy white Christian man. If you're not *all* of those things, then the federal government is helping you.

I think Social Security has been very successful. In fact many of the private pensions plans have failed and are now being funded by the government. During the Johnson administration's "war on poverty" (though I do not like the name) poverty was successfully reduced from 19% of the population to about 10%. The interstate highway system, most of the great construction projects in the mid-1900's (Hoover dam, Grand Coulee dam, our national park system, TVA, Rural Electrification Association) were all successful government projects. I think that you are in error in feeling that larger government always leads to less personal freedom. A strong police force, for example, can actually increase personal freedom if constitutional safeguards are kept in place. I feel that a strong military force under government control (in a Democracy where we control the government) is much better than a private military controlled by corporate interests. Lastly, there is no certainty that an Obama administration would increase the size of the government since it has grown tremendously under the Bush regime.

in basic terms a sovereign government can declare conflict, set up taxes, print its own forex, and make treaties with different countries. it is between the justifications that the Lebanese government is on skinny ice. It permit Hezbollah declare conflict on Israel under its roof. by employing not responding promptly and decisively to that action, they gave Hezbollah administration of Lebanon.

The government provides public goods and goods with externalities that are not captured by the free market. Examples:

roads, infrastructure, police, firemen, national defense, schools, etc.

The government can also solve information problems - i.e. adverse selection in the medical industry.

The government also can stop the irrational exuberance of the markets and become a lender of last resort during liquidity crises - i.e. the Federal Reserve stopping a full financial meltdown.

I know, I hate the thought of government taking control of so many issues in daily life. well as bad as it seems the gov. has to step in to control some aspects of "the free market" one example is Wal-mart if they wanted to they would probably be in control of every aspect of retail and anything to do with it. but the gov. regulates monopolies in various ways ect. but i wish they spent more time focusing on more importat issues like the economy instead of "the switch to digital TV"

The Civil Rights Act of 1964.

African Americans in the South were paying taxes but were not allowed to vote, the KKK would burn crosses on their lawns and the police would do nothing.
