Actually Yogi Bear character and mannerisms was based on the fictional character Ed Norton from the Honeymooners played by Art Carney. The name was a poke at baseball player Yogi Berra.
Since Jellostone Park is a play on Yellowstone Yogi probably would be a grizzly but I highly doubt a grizzly would have that laid back attitude, they're pretty aggressive you know hence the name Ursus Horribilus...horrible bear.
I would say Yogi would more likely be a black bear (they can be brown too) as they're the ones who most often break into cars to steal food and snatch picnic baskets.
EDIT: Here's a bear fact. About 10 years after the native grizzly bear became extinct California state officials decided to introduce the smaller less aggressive non native Black Bear (Ursus Americanus) in to the Yosemite National Park area. They continue to thrive to this very day. Black bears have also been introduced into other areas of California too.

You seriously going to bring up Yogi bear in a research paper? You must have a pretty chill teacher.

No. Jellystone Park is a stand-in for Yellowstone Park in Wyoming. That would make him a Wyoming grizzly bear.

They didn't really tell what type of bear he was in the cartoon. Try going on Wikipedia.

Many "species Black bear" range from honey-colored to jet black, and can get quite huge in size, with adequate food, and life in protected areas. Hey, where's my pic-a-nic basket? Regards, Larry.
