I say you guys ignore them and show as much support it is sad that some people would actually ride all the way over there to picket a funeral.

It's happened before. Lance Cpl. Adam VanAlstine, 21, from Superior, was killed by a roadside bomb in Ramadi, Iraq, Feb. 25, when he had only 15 days of active combat duty remaining to serve.

Members of the Westboro Baptist Church had planned to protest at the service as part of a continuing campaign that celebrates the deaths of U.S. troops as showing God is angered at the United States for its tolerance of homosexuality.

Group member Margie Phelps said the decision not to protest was made after the group got e-mails from local and state officials saying action would be taken upon them, regardless of where they stood to protest.

Under the new law, protesters must stay 500 feet away from a funeral during the time from one hour before the service until one hour after it. Violators can face fines up to $10,000 and nine months in jail.

Why do they do it? Who knows. But protesting at a funeral is one way to get yourself stabbed.

However, beyond the fact of my own atheism or anyone elses belief, no one should disrespect anyones' funeral. Especially someone who fought for the country that gave them the right to even think about making a site like Got hates Fags, it's simply stupid and doesn't get anyone on your side.

I will answer this question the same way that I have answered almost every question about Phelps and his "church"- they will be held accountable for their behavior- they are a prime example of what a modern day Pharisee is. I cannot believe that someone who served in the war will be picketed. those people need prayer, and God will one day hold them accountable- Good for you going to the service to support the family- they will need all the support they can get. People like the Phelps give Christianity a bad name- and unfortunately in doing that , they also give Jesus a bad name

EDIT- for the person who answered before me- defend their freedom? Freedom is not to do wrong, but freedom to do what is right. We are given freedom, however why use it to destroy when we can use freedom to bless and encourage?

Fred Phelps is a good example of what lack of education mixed with religious delusions and superstitions can lead people to do.... In most modern civilized countries he and his accomplices would be arrested and committed by a judge to a mental health institution.

Maybe there should be signs saying "Christians HATE Phelps and family."

Phelps is a big fat @$$hole. Call the police and have them kept away from the funeral.

They are intollerant hate mongers. It is absolutely selfish to disrespect the dead on the day of their memorial service. They think that their behavior is nobel. But honestly, if the whole world acted like them, the whole world would be a horrible war zone.

Also, picketing funerals is illegal.
