How can I become closer to God?
I am a liberal Christian with an open mind about all spiritual paths.
With that in mind, I do want to be closer to God. I guess that's a pretty common desire.
I am open to points of view from people of any spiritual practice (or none at all). I ask this question for two reasons: for ideas to try on my own path, and to learn about the diversity of the paths of others.
Thanks!
Thanks everyone for all the great answers! No way can I pick a "best answer" as there were so many. I'll put this one to vote and again, thank you all for your excellent sharing.

Consider becoming closer to other people. Being kind, and helping others will make others happy. Most of the time, this will encourage others pass it along to the next people that they meet. If you spark a chain of good will, it will often spread, and because the globe is now a village, the deeds you do can literally affect the entire world.
What could be more spiritually fulfilling than making the world a better place?

" I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through me." John 14:6 My friend, there is no way to God, save through Jesus. We have to be wary of having an open mind. I am open minded to the point that I agree people have the God-givin right to believe what they want. But I am closed minded because I cannot and will not accept any other "path" to be even remotely true. To grow closer to God, we must grow closer to Christ. He is the ONLY way. Remember, not only the gate to heaven is narrow, but also the path.

Talk to him daily, get to know him u can do this through prayer. Read His word so that u can get a better understanding of him and worship him. When i say worship i dont just mean like singing and going to church but by also living a life that is pleasing and acceptable to Him(God) seek his guidance and tell him your desire to be closer to u and he will direct your path and leads u to others that will be able to assist u as well.

Meditation and prayer is the greatest way to be close to God, I think. We have to stop everything that we're doing so that we can hear. I use Yoga to get to this point - some believe that the practice of Yoga is to worship the Devil, however, so you might want to look into their opinions before you jump into it. I do not believe this - if my mind, heart, and soul are not worshiping the Devil, then the position of my body on a Yoga mat does not mean that I am.

Might I suggest a really long ladder.
As an atheist, I would question whether a true Christian can be far from god; my Christian friends have lead me to believe god is in your heart, your mind and your actions.

I would say for any one to be close to their higher power is that they will find their God in the hearts and eyes of fellow human beings and even other living creatures. Love and kindness is what I find the very basics of my God. Too much from any book leads to judgment of others either by interpretation or by the words of that higher book.

Well, if you want to be closer to God, just spend time with Him. Talk to Him like you would your friends or your mom or dad. He is our Heavenly Father. Read His book, the Bible. Go to church and be with other Christians.
God Bless

The more I work on loving all people, leaving the anger and vindictiveness of my ego aside, and focusing on being humble, the closer I seem to get to God.
The more I focus on healing (of myself and other people) instead of some human form of 'justice,' and the more I focus on how we hurt each other, instead of some human form of 'injustice,' the closer I seem to get and the clearer I tend to see things.

i like this question! i'm catholic but participate in a youth group thats at a presbyterian church, but we dont base anything of that religion. i dont really know what you want me to tell you about my religion but maybe try a few different churches and see what you like. and just pray, some other spiritual exercises are meditation(just like you and god!) fasting(which could also be like fasting from things that are ungodly, haha) study, simplicity, solitude, submission, sevice. yea we went over that at our youth group. but we went on a retreat and it really brought me closer to god. we were up on this huge hill with this cross that was ginormous. you could see for miles. we sang some songs and prayed. it was amazing, i could feel god there. it totally brought me closer to god and im sooo thankful for having him in my life. good luck and youre welcome!

We find that closeness when we seek His face and surrender ourselves and our needs, trusting that He will guide... He will reveal himself to you. Knowing that you are seeking after His Will and not your own. Man sees the outward man, but God looks on the heart.
