Should the president have line item veto?

There are a lot of good bills that get vetoed because those who present them have added extra pork and garbage into them that sometimes has nothing to do with the bill itself. Is it a good idea to give the president the ability to get rid of the extra stuff that doesn't need to be there in order to pass a good bill?

I think it is a good idea to have someone who's focus is on what is best for all of the people and not just their narrow constituency with the line -item veto. However, the Supreme Court declared the law granting the president a line-item veto unconstitutional.

Clinton v. City of New York, 524 U.S. 417 (1998) is the Supreme Court case that determined that the line-item veto was unconstitutional. The case boils down to whether you have a formalist interpretation of the Constitution re: Presentment Clause, or whether you have a more functional view that sees the line item veto as nothing more than a typical presidential exercise in discretionary spending. Personally I favor the former, but it is certainly an interesting question that will no doubt reappear in the future.

A line item veto would be a huge step forward in reducing pork barrel spending.

I'll vote for the candidate that makes this a campaign issue.

I absolutely think the line-item veto is a good idea. The Republicans tried to pass this in the 90s but Bill Clinton vetoed it.
