Is it normal to have to pay a full month's rent when moving in for just the last week?

Don't most places usually prorate the rent for the partial month?

Update:

Whoever suggested that it's common to have to pay two months rent...what are you talking about? I'm not talking about a deposit but the actual monthly rent.

If you are renting out a new place and you move in the last week of the month and your landlord wants to collect rent monthly on the 1st then he needs to pro-rate that last weeks rent. You dont pay for a full month

If you have given notice to move and you pay rent on the first monthly if you give the 30 day notice on the 1st then you would pay for the full months rent because you would have use of the place for 30 more days.

Now if you give notice the last week of a month to be out in 30 days you would only pay for 3 weeks of that next month.

If you are moving in early, that rent should be prorated. IF you move out early, however, the entire month or amount to the end of the term is still owed.

Whatever it says in the lease.

Did you sign anything in reference to moving in early?

I would never pay for the entire month but I doubt there is any law as to how to handle this situation.

Maybe you can find some place to stay for that one week and move in on the first?

Maybe you are already learning that this landlord is not going to play "fair" as time goes on.

The first month is usually full rent and the second month is prorated to balance it out.
