Private Home Child Care vs. Licensed Home Child Care?

I currently run a Private Home Child Care out of my home. Lately, I have been considering doing Licensed Home Child Care. I was wondering if anyone else had done one or the other, or even both, or if any parents have used both and could tell me some of the pros and cons of each to help me make my decision?

Thanks!!

Update:

As a private home child care provider, I do do my taxes properly. We have a friend who does our taxes for us. I provide receipts for parents to claim on their taxes, as do I claim anything bought on my taxes. I claim 1/3 of all my bills, except internet, as I use those (phone, electricity, etc) on child care, I claim 1/3 of my groceries, as they eat my food too. It's not just licensed homes that get to claim taxes and give receipts.

I currently also run a private child care in my home. I looked into becoming licensed awhile back. Unfortunately, I found out that if I became licensed I would not be able to feed the children any thing canned from my garden. Right there made my decision for me. But if that doesn't bother you, I would get a licensing rule book from your BCC and look through it first. All states are different in thier regulations. My best friend is licensed and enjoys it very much.

My son has been in a Licensed Home Child Care since he was 3 months old. I would not consider a Private Home child care. I prefer the extra assurance that everything is up to par.

Do the licensed one. As a parent, I'd rather have my child go to the one that is licensed. At least they know the law of taking care of kids. Not to say, that the private ones don't. But it is more assuring to know for the parents where and who they're leaving their child with.

It is going to vary a lot by where you live and from center to center. I'm in Kansas City and here you can expect to pay at least $225/week for an infant in a large day care center, but most probably run more like $300/week. Diapers and wipes are usually provided by the parent. In-home care will run less, but I'm not sure how much.

I would only consider looking at licensed ones. Its extra assurance to know they are being regulated. I also equate licensed with being organized, and in it as an actual career, or business that the owner/operator takes pride in, and not just something on the side to make a little extra cash. I also expect them to do their taxes right, so I can claim this on mine, and my dependent care spending account.

Most jurisdictions you have to become licensed if your providing care for a certain number of children (that are not your own) at one time. It varies from jurisdiction to jurisdiction but I would make sure that you are not over the limit if your not licensed. There are probably also advantages to being licensed when it comes to insurance or if you ever get sued by anyone.
