I need a slot fan for my PC?
I have an HP Pavilion Slimline PC that has an overheating issue.
I need to get a slot fan, but I realized I don't know anything about them. I really had two questions.
1. What do slot fans use for a power supply? Are the plugged right into the PC power supply, or do they plug into the board and get their power from there like the rest of the cards?
2. I have a slim case. Do all brands of slot fans come with brackets for slim cases or only certain ones? (I didn't want to buy one that was meant for a standard slot size)

lol...normally I'd say that is a great idea, but when I asked, I got the "I can not recommend specific brands line".
I've been less than impressed with HP support.
Personally, I think the overheating issue is a design defect...but tell that to HP...the PC is pretty much brand new. If I open the side case to completely expose the inside, no heat issues. If I close the case up as it should be, eventually the unit will turn itself off when it overheats with no messages or errors.
The fans in the power supply and on the board are running fine. There is no dust in the heat sink.

First you need to figure out your overheating issue. You could just have a dust filled heatsink. Try opening the side case and blowing it out with compressed air. Make sure your fans are spinning too . should be at least two, one on the heatsink for the processor and one in the psu. You can download and install speedfan that will monitor the temp sensors and let you adjust the fan speed. See where the heat is coming from before getting a slot fan as you may need to clean or fix something else. Good luck

Well, there's a lot I need to know about your computer so let me just do my best to answer this. Is the overheating causing any problems? Random shutdowns? If so, you need a new heatsink for the processor. I recommend you have professional do it if you don't know how to do it yourself. If it's not causing any problems and just runs really hot, that's pretty much normal. But if you want a slot fan, they usually should fit right into the motherboard. I don't know about your computer though, because I don't by factory built computers, I built mine myself. I think you should take it to a PC Repair shop or a PC hardware store see what they can say about it.

of course a 120mm fan is in simple terms too super for an 80mm mounting place. If there is area to in good condition the 120mm fan there then you definately could be waiting to swap the case to settle for it. in case you are trying this then you definately could make certainly optimistic that any metallic swarf which you create is bumped off as this could reason a quick circuit if it gets onto the circuit board.

Contact HP for what model you need exactly. And I think it latches on to the PC's power supply, So you might need to also get a bigger power adapter or something.
