Microwave glass plate - any alternatives? Can any thick glass be used ...?

Having had an exciting few minutes with the microwave (left on for 10 minutes without food in the cooking vessel...), the glass turntable plate and the plastic food heater fused together! they shattered, when force was applied to separate them.

Does anyone know if it is absolutely necessary to use a thick glass plate especially made for microwaves? - or an another type of plate be used? (weirdly enough I had a spare, from a previous cooker, which I bequeathed just two weeks' ago to a charity shop).

thanks for your help.

cheers,

sue

    With my first micro wave oven I had broken my plate when I dropped it in the sink to wash it. I was told I could use a glass Pyrex pie plate. I tried it and it worked real well. At the time replacement plates were going for at least $50. Luckily, I had a glass pie plate and used that the whole time I had my oven.

    Hope this helps!

    get a new small microwave for just a tiny bit more than a replacement glass costs.. or turn a pyrex glass pie pan UPSIDE DOWN.. it will just give you a nice flat surface to set plates or bowls on.. it wont turn but will let you heat stuff while setting flat not at an angle or at the side.. I have a huge microwave that cost a bunch new.. it is a strong one.. works well.. I will do this until it wears out then buy another one.

    You can get a new one here;

    However, mine broke a few years ago, and I've been using a glass cheeseboard ever since, supported on a small bit of cork off the bottom of a tablemat so the motor turns it!

    No problems, use the microwave, oven or grill setting at least daily.

    I'll get round to ordering one, honest!

    I agree with the Pyrex. That is made especially for high temps in the regular heat-oven. Any regular piece of glass might shatter and then you'd have a real mess.

    Also, crystal has lead in it - a metal - which should not go in the microwave.
