Compare Iowa floods to Katrina damage?

There WAS OVER 1,000 deaths or/and people still missing. This is a fact.

And kudos to them for handling it better then here, I hope they all make it ok. It's a shame that a few scumbags here made much of America think most of us are that way, which is not true. I wish I could meet some of these people who say these things. They must be fantastic people *sarcasm*

And many people are working together and rebuilding IN New Orleans. But of course, you won't hear about it(or you'll just ignore it). But its the truth, there is a LOT of good here. But yeah this whole, most of new orleans is lazy and not working is bulls.... OK we are lazy but we still work and do what we need to do! Do NOT listen to the stereotypes.

I am in Iowa. I am in the NW part of the state and so unaffected physically by the floods. However my son is in the Guard and was activated Wednesday and off helping out.

That said, I know the comparisons will be made but the fact is as bad as Iowa is right now the property damage and number of people affected will not in any way, shape or form compare the New Orleans. Why? Simple. New Orleans is much, much bigger than any city here affected. Cedar Rapids has a population of 120,000 people.

That said, why can't we say that the way the communities and officials and even the federal government are responding here are because of the mistakes made in Katrina.

Why can't we say, Thank God, lessons were learned in Katrina and we are seeing that now here in Iowa?

So far loss of life and injury in Iowa have been minimal even though there has been heavy duty loss of property.

In Katrina over 1000 people died and chaos reined due to the widespread damage done by the storms.

The scope of the loss cannot be compared although it is a serious loss to those who are affected. The Feds and State, as well as the Red Cross, will move in to help those who were dislocated.

Where do you get idea that people don't care?

Most of us are concerned about other Americans who suffer misfortune.

Anyone who would honestly compare the two is either:

1) grossly uninformed

or

2) a complete moron

I know a bunch of people in Iowa and I obviously feel for them and their losses. But there is no comparison whatsoever. The scope of the disasters, in both geographic and population terms, are wildly different. For example, in Iowa there were evacuations that affected thousands of people (40,000 on the high bound estimates); for Katrina there were millions. In Iowa the water should recede by Monday; in New Orleans there was standing water for months. And that's without even acknowledging the fact that there were over 1,800 deaths attributed to Katrina.

I could go on and on but there's really no point - if you are honestly uninformed and entertaining a comparison, you should probably read some reliable news reports and compare stats. But if you'd instead prefer to get your information from posting a question to crazy racists and 13-year-olds on a Yahoo message board... well then, you deserve exactly the caliber of answers that you will get...

Iowa people will figure it out.

Katrina people needed someone else to figure it out.

Nobody cares about Cedar Rapids, Iowa. If this flood happened in NYC, there would be fund drives all over the U.S. to help. Fact is, the right and left coast pretty much don't care what goes on in the heartland. Just watch the national news, the lead story will be a factory fire in the Bronx and not flooding that has flooded a whole state.

Iowa was better prepared than the folks were for Katrina, for one. And, in the case of Des Moines, we learned from the mistakes of the Flood of '93 and came out of this in better shape. And Iowans will rebound, no doubt.

Because most towns and cities in Iowa have competent mayors and other local officials who deal with their constituents in their public pronouncements instead of the national media to try to blame President Bush for their woes.

Those officials also used the resources available within their communities to get people evacuated in advance of the flooding in many cases. More importantly, they stayed in their communities to lead rescue and recovery efforts.

Competence is not a news story with "sizzle" that can capture a crowd and have them hang around long enough to sell them stuff. So, the "news outlets" have to look for something else to report.

Iowa people are and will be taking care of themselves. They will probably even help surrounding states. Amazing isn't it that no one's blamed their elected officials or demanded the USA help them.

Notice college students and faculty were filling thousands of sand bags and placing them- they didn't stand around,waiting, they just TOOK CARE OF BUSINESS.

By the way, this was forecast to happen, Iowa was getting ready.

I'm from Colorado, know no one from Iowa.

Iowa is much more decent, they are even helping Michigan in a certain county I am in with the massive power outages, tree downs etc..Iowa is VERY generous in my opinion.

ppl don't care b.c cider rapids, Iowa city, etc is not a major city like new Orleans. but unlike new Orleans, Iowa will rebuild. they will tack help from the goverment and stuff, but they will pull together to rebuild!!!!!
