If we free ourselves from karma what is left then?

When we pass from this life and go through the process that leads to re-birth we are reborn with no memory of who we were. This means the person we are now is de-facto dead, right? What is that which is left when you subtract the body and all of our memories including the personality?

- are we just a big bundle of karma on a collision course with another body and mind, if so then is that really all we are? If we free ourselves from karma (samsara) through enlightenment what is left, then, to actually be enlightened?

Update:

Yes, but what IS that "pure, innocent essence"?

Update 2:

please no "find Jesus" stuff, answer the question or don't but don't try to convert me. Thanks!

Dartagnan is very much on the right track; so are you, Mr. Rostov.

The result of being free from karma (habit) is that all your actions then become fully intentional, free of influence from karmic dependency. It is a state which transcends the three kayas of emanated existence; a new state, called in Tibetan, 'bon-sku.' The illusion of samsara is broken, time and space have no meaning or limitations -- as the old hot-dog stand joke goes, you'll "have one with everything."

It is Buddhahood and liberation from samsara. Many of those who have achieved this state try to lead others to their condition. It is true enlightenment. When in Buddhist practices we read, 'the tri-kaya ocean of victors' -- this state is what they mean. When we achieve that state, well, is a subject of much debate.

And it does mean that the little person you are right now no longer exists (you might say it doesn't exist anyway).

What is left when you subtract the body, all memories and the personality (all samsaric illusions)? Pure awareness.

Then, having left all of samsara honestly and earnestly behind -- if you choose, you can pick them up again, as the toy masks that they are -- and try to help others achieve the same. As much as enlightenment is the end of the work of liberation; it's also the beginning.

Well, we can't readily recall memories of what/who we are now when we're born into our next life. But with some digging around if we're conscious enough, we can recall things that have happened to us in our past lives. Also, think of beings like the Dali Lama or the Karmapa, they are reincarnated beings who are choosing to come back as humans to help us all attain enlightenment.

Here is my theory (for what it's worth), when we reach enlightenment and understand our "true" nature, then we dissipate into pure energy and cease being bound by the rules of karma and therefore can do pretty much whatever we want, if such pure energy has a desire to be anything. Perhaps we too can choose to come back as a human to help those that are suffering.

In any case, a very thought provoking question.

Karma does not automatically turn into destiny. What karma results is only potentials that needs other elements to ripen the seed. Just like a seed, without sun, water or soil will not sprout. Hence someone who committed a certain bad karma in the past, if he follows the correct practice of the noble eightfold path may be able to snuff the seed of the bad karma without any norishments for it to grow. Same is true with good karma, if one cultivates the defiled ways, then perhaps his good karmas cannot meet the condusive environment to grow. There is no destiny, just laziness

Once we free ourselves of guilt and can control our actions with total perfection THEN we can free ourselves of karma. Enlightenment should free us but should we digress would it not immediately return us to a karma controlled environment? But should we be able to make the split complete without possibility of digression we would achieve spiritual purity. Wouldn;t that mean that we would simply exist and experience EVERYTHING without any emotional or mental reaction, but at the same time we would understand and "feel" reality with our spiritual self, nothing else, as if we were disconnected from our emotional and physical self and simply floating in space, with no where to go but better yet, with no desire to go anywhere. The total absorption of ALL. Would that mean that we would be GOD? AT least we could consider Him an equal and swap 5!

    :-)

    Peace

Pure, innocent self. Your essence. You do carry your karma from one life to the next. Once you become aware of this, you can stop the chain of self abuse. This is where the concept of original sin really came from. You're born with your karma, or sin to some. It's not something you need a god to forgive you of. You need to heal yourself of the past karma. Then you are free. It's like once you become aware of past karma affecting your reactions now, you stop the cycle. Don't react. Check yourself instead and ask why am I feeling and reacting this way? Then let it go. But, always check your reactions. There lies the hidden karma.

between the aim at Bliss and the aim at Happiness.

    just a reminder:

pains and sufferings came along with the chase on happiness. such happiness is short-termed.

the meaning of Bliss does not subject to after-life alone.

it mean now too, our practice on bliss, our habits of action and reaction with a blissful mind.

    before we jump to reborn.

look around, there are very kind-natured people and the funny one too. it is the conscience of goodness and rubbish that tact along.

memories in this conscience is not lost after rebirth,

it just got forgotten due to our relentless crave and anger (cloud).

""" do you still remember the name of all your childhood friends?""""

with much practice on calming the mind,

    our memories will surface again.

:::::"The Moon has not disappeared, it's just behind the cloud":::::

you are not alone, my dear friend.

your practice of the path is accompanied by many me.

    Please don't give up.

You only live one life. If you really did live more than once, wouldnt it make sense to be able to actually remember what you've learned from past lives in order to be totally enlightened? how can you become enlightened if you keep living and re living and re living and be able to build upon what you've learned to reach the stage your tryin to get to if you cant remember conciously what you learned in your first lives? How do you do that if you just keep being reborn to only forget again and start over?? this idea does not bring peace in my heart im sorry :( i do not mean to offend it just doesnt make sense

Only Jesus Christ and God's loving grace can save you from sin that you were born into. Thats why Jesus came, so we would have a chance to see truth and live a happy life in His love and have a relationship with Him. He sets you free from the scary dark place of "not knowing where you are going once you die" With Him there is no guessing what the truth really is, He loves you and wants you to have a loving relationship with the Creator of the universe and for you to just be happy and know all the real truth. Its very simple really, He just simply loves you

Its your choice to believe whatever you want and you dont have to believe in Jesus, thats your right to free will. I wish you luck on your quest to happiness and truth

Nibbana. Nibbana is cessation; complete liberation from the round of rebirth. Don't ask me to tell you more. I can't because I'm not liberated from the round of rebirth, so I can't tell you what it's like. The Buddha described it as cessation; remainderless fading away. I don't know any more than that.

You need a firm foundation and no other foundation can man lay except that which is in Christ Jesus. Unless you are born again you can not see the Kingdom of Heaven.

You can trust Jesus Christ, He came to earth to save us, trust in Him now while you still have time. Just look to Him and give your life to Him and love him, he loves you just as you are but he will not leave you that way he will change you and make you new creation. Read the Holy Bible.

Your journey is supposedly over and then you are supposedly 'free'. There is nothing left but annihilation of your soul:
