Psychology a Useless Major?

I'm trying to decide on a major and I've been thinking about psychology, so I decided to check out what people on yahoo answers had to say about it. I was schocked to discover that many people consider psychology worthless. I've always heard the jokes about philosophy and communications majors, but until yesterday I had never heard anyone say that about psychology before. I had always that psychologists did rather well financially and that they were fairly well respected, so I'm totally surprised to see that people are trashing psychology as a 'weak' field of study and a unuseable degree. I realize that to directly apply the degree you need to go to grad school (although I do know several counsellors who did not and do quite well) but how is that any different than biology? Is psychology really 'useless' or is this just coming from engineering and science snobs who want to feel superior?

If you're interested in understanding the human condition or helping with the human condition, then psychology will be interesting and useful for you. However, getting bachelors degree in psychology doesn't actually qualify you to do anything at all. It just tells employers that you have the self-discipline to finish a four-year program of study.

In order to actually USE your psychology degree as a psychologist or similar, you have to go to graduate school. This is common with many degrees now so don't be discouraged.

I've made my living for 30 years with a graduate degree in psychology, but more important, I understand my family, the impact my family had on me, and I think I'm a much better mother because of it.

I used to be a pure science snob, that considered fields like psychology and sociology "soft". At the first and second year undergraduate level, while I was poring over labs and the books on organic chemistry, the science majors were partying it up. Hence, a distain my my science peers grew for psychology.

Fast forward 15 years. I have a graduate degree in I/O psych, and am pursuing the PhD level (I left behind my biochemistry degree). Psychology is all around you and has many applications, from understanding child development, morale in organizations, and gaining perspective in mental illness. This is just the tip of the iceberg. Granted, lots of pop psychology out there that compromise the field sometimes, but by and large, psychology has been valuable in almost everything involving human interaction.

All in all, I think those that think psychology is useless are naive - "never attribute to malice what can be fully explained by ignorance"!

The problem with a Psych Major is... you can't DO anything with it... you need at least a Master's Degree to do Psychology professionally, so a Bachelor's Degree is merely an entry level skill to qualify you for more training.

I'm a sophomore in college now and I changed my major from elementary education to psychology. Its a rising field and they do bring success. I've done research too

I personnaly find psychology to be useful in story writing. People love stories that explain why people do certain things or why society functions in a certain way, and psychology gives up most of the answers to that!

Psychology in general is great if you want to be able to understand people better.

Ppl who consider psychology worthless are worthless themselves. Everything a person does has to do with his/her psychology. From the simplest things to the most complicated ones.

Don't listen to them. It's a very important major and many ppl will be needing it in the future (they already are, actually).
