Serious question..... What book would you recommend??

for someone wanting to learn more about historical and future ramifications of different economic policies?... I'm a CPA and have had economics courses so I understand some of the principles of taxes and economics but would like to learn more for myself..... and another requirement is one that is not party biased

There is so much "propoganda" out there that it's hard to see the true effects of differing types of policies

thanks in advance

Update:

Alright people I didn't ask for bashing of candidates in my question..... this is a serious question that would probably help a lot of people if they did the same!

Update 2:

And this question is not in the wrong forum.... this question directly affects an educational process that I/everyone should go through before choosing a candidate in November

Update 3:

Also I'm a Christian and have read the Bible that is not going to help me with a more in depth understanding of our economy

    Great question!

If you want to get a good grip on the history of our own modern democracy, I would recommend:

The Age of Anxiety By Hayes which looks at the effects that policy has had on America from today back through McCarthy. If you go back much farther, the parties of the "old days" bear little resemblance to the parties today.

For a world view on politics and in particular the economic effect of various plans and parties positions, i read The Economist which is a pretty slant free magazine.

I believe that reading the theories of the world's renowned economists would only serve to confuse. Galbraith's ideas differed from Friedman's. Opinions are like PT Cruisers, everyone has one. When I was a kid what happened in the stockmarket today was a harbinger of things to come. With computers and communications what they are now, world economies are affected instantly. Speculators drive prices and anyone who thinks things aren't being controlled artificially is an idiot. There are no true free markets, except the black markets worldwide. In short, you could read everything from Adam Smith to Greenspan and only become more confused.
