High school top XC runners are now running as fast as the top 14's (high 14 mins.) Of course, that's not very common. I'd say average times for males vary from 16-21 mins. for the 5k.

    i am a 15 year old girl and i run a 5K in like 18 minutes. ....

the guys on my x-country team consistently run in the high 15's low 16's

your definetly off to a start but 22 min. won't get you anywhere if ur looking to competitivly run cross country

do a lot of summer training... run every day and work up the mileage.... im sure they have a summer cross country program but try to run 6 days a week, and have one hard day a week (around 12 miles) with the rest of the days between 4-10, also do push ups and situps every day

then after running and getting into shape which will take a few weeks, start doing workouts such as hill workouts where you basically sprint up sets of 10 hills, and fartlicks which are continuous workouts (no stopping or walking), so run 5 minutes hard then a 5 min break (slow jog) continualluy

    i hope this helps....

also.. summer training makes the biggest difference

at the high school state track meet this guy named german doubled in the 1600 and 3200, ran a 4 flat and like an 8:3x or 8:4x for the 3200 (set a national high school record) and nobody had every really heard of him before,

and when they were interviewing and they asked him how he had gotten so good his senior year he told them it was because of summer training :) TRUE STORY

    good luck!

Well that time is very common among Freshman entering high school. I'm a sophomore and I run around 16 flat for a 5k. The guy who wins at the district meet runs about a 15 flat. So you have a long way to go if you want to win some big meets.

To be competitive you need to get your average down to no more than 6 minutes per mile. You should able to get into the 17 minute range. Runners that are really good average in the high 4 minutes per mile to low 5 minutes for a time of around 15 minutes. I ran in the 16 minute range on my high school team.

Would help if I knew if you were male or female. In the military we do a lot do cross country but we have different standards by gender, although I have known more then a few females who could run me into the dirt despite the segregated grading.

are you a male or female?

    and how old are you?

my father, 47 years old, runs about 17 minutes

my male neighbor, 18 years old, runs about 14-15 minutes

i, a female, 17 years old, run about 20 minutes

my friend, a female, 17 years old, runs about 18-19 minutes

thats a decent time if it's your first year im a 14 year old female though and my p.r. is 19:57 but if you keep working at it your times go down really fast especially for boys
