  • Layman philosophy: does this argument prove Gods existence?

hey guys here is one I thought of this morning, I don't study philosophy, I expect mature answers -

If a man gets slapped in the face, he can safely assume that the offender doesn't like him. Why then do some men still believe that life has meaning despite their life experiences of suffering? Or why do some men feel disappointed when they 'realise' life has no meaning? Life has meaning that can only be met by God.

    1. All human beings have a desire to give life meaning

    2. This is either by nurture or nature

3.1. If by nurture, meaning is learned from our world and universe,

    4. Therefore our life has meaning

3.2. If by nature, meaning is intrinsically part of being a human being,

    4. Therefore our life has meaning

    5. The highest possible truth in life is God

    6. God is the highest meaning

    7. Therefore God exists

    notes:

    1. - the keyword in not 'All' but 'Desire', no-one exists who does not seek some sort of identity or meaning or fulfilment - many people say their meaning is life enjoyment, but obviously admit that there is no eternal point/truth to his version of freedom.

3.1 - if meaning is ultimately learned through the world and universe - we evolved towards homo-sapien, our self awareness (which forms our identity in society) sought an identity in within the world and universe, we may have no identity but we still realise a purpose or meaning to the world and universe.

    6. Its logical then to believe in God, weather you know he exists or not, because nothing can explain him

    7. He must exist since he is the highest meaning of life

Enjoy discussing that, I hope its interesting! :)

  • Is it possible to abseil on your own?

I have never done climbing, I know nothing about it and am virtually completely ignorant about all climbing rules, equipment and safety. and so on and so on. BUT

I had a thought about urban exploration, and maybe abseiling in a manner whereby a fig of 8 knot is attached to your harness, with the rope being hooped or fed through a secure point at the top and the other end in your belay device. this means that when you get to the bottom you can simply pull the rope though, lo and behold no one needs to be at the top to collect it.

this would be useful for the last man down from the top of the building to do, for obvious reasons.

    thank you for your time!

  • Can someone explain why this snake doesn't kill this child? (video)?

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_oh0v_DHFrw&NR=1

This is a weird video I just found, maybe someone could explain? Has anyone seen this before on their travels, has the cobra had is venom removed or something?

Please, no hippies answering about how 'irresponsible' it is, unless you actually have a clue about the background of this video.

  • For those of you who breed rabbits for meat or rats for your reptiles, how much does it cost per month?

(hypothetically) Breeding rabbits or rats for food

Meat costs so much nowadays I want to know if is is an economically viable idea?

Other benefits might include knowing that your animals are healthy and free-range before you eat them, and not mistreated. so its ethical, too.

So how much does it cost? (rabbits or rats)

  • How can I go to palistine and help the wounded?

I'm a care assistant in an old peoples home and i think that my experience of the care of the people there could be put to good use abroad in a place such as Palestine (or where ever there is a humanitarian crisis) that need people to work in the hospitals there to dress wounds, wash people, apply first aid, assist nurses etc. I would not mind paying to get there, sooo...

    1) What organisations do this? (if any)

    2) Should I start saving, and if so how much?

    Remember, I'll go anywhere!

    Thanks very much!
