When did the phrase " You Know" become an oral comma in the English language?

If you listen to people calling in on talk-shows or even some of the paid-folks talking on TV, the number of times that "you know" is used is totally out of line. When did this twist in the English ( or American) language start?

That is a good question. It most likely started as some popular thing to say in a small area and then spread all among the masses to become a space filler-upper that requires no response. It can get annoying. There's a new one spreading among the internet..."amirite?" I guess the craze started over the need to be validated while speaking. I wonder if other languages do this also.

  • There's no way to track when that actually started. Since it is an "oral" thing. But I want to know that also... great Q
