Ok, i need this word but i can't think of it. I'll try explain it as best i can:

it means kind of sympathise with someone because you know how they feel.

here's the sentence that it goes in:

His use of language and points of reference enabled me to ...(word)

like compassionate but not just different. I don't know, I'm sorry i haven't been very helpful but any ideas would be really appreciated thank you so much! :)

    Your word is :

    empathize (Am)

    or empathise

    Both are correct.

Empathize, or possibly commiserate? Commiserate (usually followed by "with") means to express or feel pity.

(And good guy has it right about the spelling of empathize ... sympathise can be spelled with an "s" or a "z", but empathize is "z" only.)

sympathise is the only one that I could think of right now.

To feel or express compassion, as for another's suffering; commiserate.

To share or understand the feelings or ideas of another: sympathized with the goals of the committee.

    To be in accord; correspond.

    sympathizer sym'pa·thiz'er n.

    sympathizingly sym'pa·thiz'ing·ly adv

the top of the tongue phenomena is declared as "spreading pathology of lexical activation" I only wanted to have the ability to apply something I found out in school to justify my extensive pupil own loan ;)

yes, i think the word you are looking for is indeed "empathize", but the above answerer did spell it wrong (in case you wanted to look it up in the dictionary)...empathize is spelled with a "z" instead of an "s".

I think it is... wait, ... its right at the tip of my tongue... - but it escapes me.

    empathy...

= Identification with and understanding of another's situation, feelings, and motives.

I know just how you feel

    : )

Empathise = sympathize: be understanding of; "You don't need to explain--I understand!" Hope that helps.
