Is this another example of Bible passage cherry picking by a religious bigot?

From what I gather, Senator Obama, in his appeal to evangelicals, mentioned the Book of Leviticus, which says (among other things) that slavery's okay but eating oysters isn't. My buddy James Dobson claims Obama's twisting these Old Testament writings that (in his words) "don't apply anymore" with the words of Jesus.

The most common passage used by evangelicals in Leviticus is 18.22: "Thou shalt not lie with mankind as with womankind; it is an abomination." Leviticus is an Old Testament writing...did James Dobson just say the Old Testament prohibition against homosexuality doesn't apply anymore? I think he did.

Who else finds this type of cherry picking by many Christians mind boggling? Highlighting everything in the Bible that supports their own argument while ignoring or make excuses for what contradicts them. Is this hypocrisy at it’s most audacious or just a result of a rigid self delusional mind?

"But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned."

Christian's are not under the old testament law that was a covenant with the Jewish people a whole group. The New Testament is an individual covenant we are all now judged as an individual not a group like the Jews are. The Old Testament has good guidlines to follow but everything we need to follow was repeated by Jesus. For example Jesus worked on the Sabbath he healed people. Jesus also mentioned that lust, heterosexual, homosexual ect is adultry of the heart and is a sin. The 10 commandments were covered in just 2 commandments Love thy God, love thy nieghbor. So you can call it cherry picking if you want, but it just shows me that you probably don't understand Christianity.

Rev 21:8 But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.

Rom 1:26 For this cause God gave them up unto vile affections: for even their women did change the natural use into that which is against nature:

Rom 1:27 And likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another; men with men working that which is unseemly, and receiving in themselves that recompence of their error which was meet.

    new testament,

Jesus has made a way out of a sinful lifestyle.

    God's word is 4 ever.

Those who actually study with an intent to understand rather than refute realize that the New Testament church in Acts debated how much of the Old Testament law still applies to Christians....and ruled that very little of the ritual law (such as clean and unclean foods and fabrics) were to apply to Gentiles. However, even though Paul felt things such as "clean and unclean" no longer apply to Gentiles, he validated the prohibition on homosexuality when he himself called it unnatural in Romans 1.

EDIT: THIS QUESTION and the atheist responses has opened my eyes a bit to just HOW LITTLE the typical atheist understands how the Apostles and the early church interprted the Old Testament and "put it all together."

Sounds like YOU are the cherry-picking bigot.

Try Romans 1. This chapter lays it all out very carefully.

The way the skeptics, scoffers and mockers pervert things is just mind boggling!

Perhaps you should actually READ the book that you're trying so hard to condemn! You quote others, who have quoted others, but you obviously have never even READ the Bible, other than passages and phrases taken totally out of their contextual setting, to build up a straw man to tear down, thinking you've done something wonderful and tremendous, but actually accomplishing nothing, zero, zilch, nada!

Dobson is not helping Christianity. In fact, all James Dobson helps is his bank account.

I applaud Obama for standing up to these religious bullies who would send everyone but the flock that makes them rich to hell.

Cherry picking? Give me a break. You either believe the Bible or you don't. YOU are the one who is picking and choosing what passages you choose to believe.

You're either on Dobson's payroll, or you're one of his indoctrinated minions. If you continue to follow this charlatan, you will be a disgrace to your country and your religion.

It has always blown my mind that a person can use the words of another person to justify their own actions. (The Bible is written by people no matter what is thought about it, unless of course God did actually do the whole thing on the mountain, in fire, and on stone tablets)

If something is right, then surely there have to be better arguments than: "my teacher said so", "my mum said so", "the Bible says so"

The dietary restrictions were revised in the NT.

But there are still plenty of other examples of prohabitions in Leviticus that Christians are perfectly okay with now without them being mentioned in the NT.

The Bible says the Law kills. Because noone can live up to it.

Therefore our Creator gave us the Law of Grace, Forgiveness.

Christianity teaches to correct our own mistakes, before we try to help others with their burdens.

Everyone has a spirit in them. And we are all God's children.

Any kook can find a passage to support any notion they wish to push on as an agenda. The Bible is like a person; torture it enough and you can make it say anything you want it to. You haven't figured that out yet?

It's okay if THEY do it, after all God speaks to them and gives them the understanding to know which things to obey and which to chuck out the window. But if a non-christian points out these inconsistencies, we are just persecuting them, and we don't have God to hold our hand and show us the nuances of what the bible REALLYmeans.
