Can you take Vicaden (pain medicine)while you are pregnant?

My friend is pregnant and she is taking Vicaden. I told her that I didn't think that she should be taking such harsh medicines while pregnant but she asures me that her doctor perscribed them for her while she was pregnant with her last 2 children.

Vicaden is Acetaminophen which is okay to take during pregnancy, however it should only be used under a doctors supervision and a minimum dose. Extra strength Tylenol will give the same pain relief if that's what she needs.

Most doctors will deny prescribing any narcotics prior to 12 weeks because there is possibility of damaging the development of the fetus in the 1st trimester. I have been put on Vicodin, Tylenol 3, and Darvocet, but am not able to tolerate these drugs, so I just try dealing with the pain.

Just because pregnant woman can't have ibuprofen doesn't mean they can't have vicodin... it's not the same meds. But yes it's safe... my friend was pregnant with her second child and started getting migrains so the doc prescribed them because THEY were safe for her to take rather than other pain meds. Her baby came out healthy and happy

"Pregnancy Category C. There are no adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women. VICODIN Tablets should be used during pregnancy only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus."

Now comes the reasons she's taking Vicodin. Does she have a medical problem that constitutes her having it, and did her doctor prescribe to her Vicodin now or is she taking old medication. Because she shouldn't be taking it just because she has beore in the past, there needs to be a good reason why a doctor would prescribe it basically.

I am 37 weeks pregnant and have had a really bad pregnancy. I have been on vicaden for about 3 months and nothing is wrong with my baby. It won't harm the baby or docs wouldn't prescribe it. but she does need to let her doc know so he don't put her on n e thing that can affect the vicaden

I took vicodin for my second month of my pregnancy ( Before I knew I was pregnant). I had four wisdom teeth removed. I thought the morning sickness was just sickness and pain or an infection because of my surgery so the doc prescribed me vicodin. It really helped me sleep lol, I had bad morning sickness and heartburn at night.

go to safefetus.com they list the ratings of all drugs you can take while pregnant.

I don't think that vicoden is safe for pregnant women to take, though. I know if ibuprofen isn't safe, then vicoden shouldn't be either. But of course, I'm not a doctor, either.

"The effects of Vicodin in pregnancy have not been adequately studied. Do not take this drug if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant unless you are directed to do so by your doctor. Drug dependence occurs in newborns when the mother has taken this drug regularly prior to delivery. If you take it shortly before delivery, the baby's breathing may be slowed. Acetaminophen does, and hydrocodone may, appear in breast milk and could affect a nursing infant. If this medication is essential to your health, your doctor may advise you to discontinue breastfeeding your baby until your treatment is finished."

It's ok to take vicodin, but make sure your doctor knows about this. Your doc may not want you to take this and will prescribe you something else.

    I would recommend that she

Switch to Tylenol (since vicodin is basically Tylenol with oomph) because it's safer.
