Why is everyone writing bi-lingual? It's simply bilingual. To answer your questions, yes, children learn both languages, and no, it is not confusing.

I grew up in a bilingual home and it's not confusing at all until it comes to learning how to write the language. Its easier to learn English because we do that in school and my parents speak English too but I can also speak my parent's original language fluently. When it comes to writing characters, then it gets confusing.

my daughter is 4.5 and totally bi-lingual - she can switch from one language to another and translate every word... it's not confusing to her as she chooses a language appropriately when talking to different people. my only concern is - she will forget her native language once she is in school so I will try to do my best in teaching her so she will stay bi-lingual...

We are bilingual and our kids speak both languages. The older one who is 8 is fluent with both but the younger one who is 4 speaks english but limited other language though she understands most of it. Hoping that she will catch on soon.
However i have seen a kid (a friend's kid) who had a problem and the speech therapist suggested that they should concentrate on one language first (while exposing her to the second one). This was when she was about 4. She is now 7 and speaks both languages beautifully.

Yes they do.They will learn both languages, and it is better for them to learn English and another language at an early age. It strengthens their minds, and generally they do better at school. But, if, say, Japanese is their native tongue, they it will be harder. But if English is, and they're learning Japanese too, then it will be easier and better.
