Staying dry during nap time, any tips?

I have been potty training my son since the second week of May. He is brilliant when he is awake for wee's, getting there with poo's, but not so good for nap time. I bought waterproof pants, but they are only good for little wee's so the bed is soaked. I put him on the loo before he goes to sleep, and he always goes. I think he goes for a wee when he wakes up, forgetting that he does not have a nappy on. I don't want to put a nappy on for nap time as I think this will send mixed signals to him. Does anyone have any tips? It isn't every nap time, but it is more often than none. Help!

you sound like a wonderful mum....well done you for not caving in and putting a nappy back on for naps....somehow you will have to get him to the potty as soon as he wakes up..how about.....when he is asleep take his favourite teddy and put it by the potty...and tell him that when he wakes up....he will have to go and look for his teddy who is probably on his potty doing his business.....and that he should try and get there in front of teddy tomorrow.....therefore it will become a bit of a game....for a few times take teddy to the potty before your boy wakes...then after a few days leave his teddy in his bed/cot and tell him he has got to get there as soon as he wakes up before teddy does....may work. Worth a try.

    Good luck to you.

Oh boy. Naps have been the hardest for us, too! My daughter was trained in one day, just before she turned 3, so daytime was wonderful. Nighttime, I was expecting to be woken up in the middle of the night and prepared to change bedsheets, but it never happened. Somehow, my daughter has managed to stay dry every night, all night, since we started using underpants for naps and nighttime. Naps, are more like yours however. She'd have an accident or two one week, then none for a couple weeks, and back and forth. Then at the sitter's one week, she had accidents during naps 3 out of the 5 days she was there. Due to making such a mess (and ruining some of the sitter's stuffed animals), we finally started using Pull Ups just for naps. So if she did wet, at least it wouldn't get all over the place. My daughter understood they were not for going potty in, as we never used them before while training (we used cloth training pants), just so if she DID happen to wet at least it would soak it up. She had a few wet naptimes, but we are finally at a point where she's been dry long enough that the sitter has her staying in regular undies for naps now, and so far, so good.

I told my mom I was worried about my daughter being confused and us sending 'mixed signals', but we tried and it didn't cause any problems as far as that being an issue.

When I was very little, around 2,I would go down for a nap and if I had to go potty I would dream that my stepmother was putting me on the potty. Unfortunately I was not on the potty, I was in my bed and would wet the bed. This did not go over well. They have little boxers out now, I think they are called Goodnights Boxers. He would think he was just wearing little shorts but they would "catch" anything if he should have an accident.

I'm in the US. I'm not sure what a nappy is.

We used pull-ups. They're kind of like diapers but for bigger kids they can put them on and take them off themselves. Like regular underwear. They contain the wetness very well.

We had my daughter put them on herself before nap time and take them off as soon as she woke up. We made sure that she understood they were just in case of accidents, but she should get up and go to the toilet if she had to go. When the pull-ups were dry a few times we stopped using them. We followed the same procedure for night time too.

Make a BIG deal when he wakes up dry. Cheers, high fives and happiness etc. Tell him your REALLY proud of him for going to the potty. Don't react at all if he has an accident. Don't chastise him or anything. Maybe have him help you clean it up. But don't get angry. Make sure its no big deal. You don't want to give him anxiety over it or he'll never sleep because he's worried he'll wet the bed.

Don't let him have any liquids for at least 30 minutes prior to nap time or bed time. Maybe a swallow of water if he's thirsty but keep it to a minimum. Have him go potty before he goes to bed. Have him go to the potty as soon as he wakes up even if he's already wet the bed. That way it becomes a habit. "Wake up. Go potty."

    Good luck.

dont give him fluids a half yr before naps- keep going with the no diaper policy - when he is ready he will get it- keep up the good work....
