What does R&S think of Spain's plans to grant human rights to apes?

The Spanish parliament has approved legislature granting the right to life and freedom to great apes.
is this a step in the right direction or a grave misjudgment?
I personally think that as our closest genetic relatives, it's about time we recognised the closeness and gave them the respect they deserve, what do you think?
Tangerine Jello: If you read the details of my question I actually expand to say that they've been granted limited human rights, such as the right to life and freedom rather than the right to assemble in protest and what have you.

Anyone remember a long time ago when a little boy fell into the silverback ape exhibit in a zoo, and a mother ape came over and protected the boy, patting him on the back to comfort him and keeping the young, curious apes at bay. Tell me they are just mindless animals incapable of displaying human characteristics.

Cylon Angel - something like that happened at a zoo in my area - Brookfield Zoo - I don't know if that is what you are referring to, but I remember that!
I don't know if it is a "grave misjudgement" - I'm all for humane treatment of animals. I say we sit back and see what happens before we judge it.
Peace!

So what? What if we raised the stakes a bit for you.
Which country recognizes that animals have the ability to believe in a God? Another creature that is not a human being.
Now that would be something.

I think it is wonderful. I was just thinking the other day about whether or not we treat great apes well enough. I hope this prevents future abuse from occurring and helps preserve those species. My opinion of Spain has just increased.

I think treating animals decently is wonderful -- giving them human rights though may be a bit much, because well, they are not human.
I am all for terrific treatment -- just the same as a human, I can see some potential problems arising.

It sounds like the Spanish are very enlightened. I applaud them. All animals have rights. They have souls, are intelligent and have as much right to live as humans.
Apes use tools, can develop language and use reasoning and they don't dig up coal, oil and burn them and pollute the air.

Oh yeah that's great! Giving right to life to an ape when the US doesn't give right to life to a baby being born. They don't have souls?
That make a lot of sense!!!!!!!!!

Apes don't kill apes!
