How does a sex change work? Going from woman to man...?
I was just watching South Park, it is the one where Mr. Garrison becomes Mrs. Garrison. Well it got me to thinking about sex changes, specifically going from woman to man. How does that actually work? (I get how they construct the penis and testicles, that’s not what I am asking.) Does the woman, soon to be man, have to have a total/partial hysterectomy? Or can they have their uterus and ovaries left in? And if they are left in, how does the whole monthly cycle work? Are they given steroids? Testosterone? I know these are probably stupid questions, but I was curious as to how it worked. Thanks for all of your answers.

Honey, I suggest you don't try to find serious answers to ANY question by watching 'South Park' ;)
A transsexual man (not, btw, a"woman, soon to be man"; transsexual men are NOT women, any more than transsexual women are men), in the early stages of transition, starts taking testosterone. This has the effect of stopping his menstrual cycle, as well as the obvious external changes (muscle bulk, voice breaking, facial and body hair, et.c). Most transmen have chest surgery (mastectomy) very early in their transition, and most will have hysterectomy and salpingo-oophorectomy at some point; although this is not compulsory (as evidenced by the story of Thomas Beattie), it's recommended by gender specialists because of a perceived higher risk of some cancers, and PCOS, if these organs are left intact while taking long-term testosterone.

I'm no expert, but I've seen a few discovery shows on this over the years. The process starts with taking hormones of the sex they want to be, so that men who want to become women will have higher voices, less facial hair, etc. I don't *think* they are given steroids (for female to male), but I'm not positive. Then they have to dress and act like the sex they want to be--this process takes a year or longer--to make SURE that this is what they want before a permanent operation. At this time, they still have the original sex organs, but if a female is taking male hormones, they might not have a cycle anymore. So anyway, when they have the operation, they definitely remove all the original sex organs and replace them with new ones. Also many people usually have facial and body plastic surgery to look more like the opposite sex, but this could happen before the actual sex change operation.

Have you heard about a month or so ago that there is a man, who was once a woman, who is pregnant? I can not remember where she lives, but she is indeed pregnant. She will have a cessarian section to deliver the baby.
She was born a woman, but wanted to be a man, so when she was an adult she stared hormones to grow man anatomy and to present her body with more testosterone. She grew a penis but kept her vagina and all reproductive organs. She lives with a woman, who has always been a woman and that is her partner. She has regular periods but not monthly. They used a sperm donor to conceive a child and had invetro. The baby is due in a couple of months.
Runa search on a search engine for man that is pregnant or pregnant man. He was on a special story on dateline or 60 minutes not too long ago. Check it out...it is very interesting.

<sigh> nobody "changes" into anything. transwomen..women born with male biology...have surgery to bring their body into allignment with their brain. men don't change into women and women don't change into men....we are all what we are at birth and nothing can alter that. gender identity is determined between the ears, not between the legs. i had surgery for two reasons: 1. i absolutely despised having a penis. it was a constant reminder of what went wrong when i was yet in the womb. since i was a very little girl it was the defining reason for people to not allow me to grow up as i believed i should have...as a girl. 2. i wanted to have a vagina. i wanted to experience all the joys and feminine pleasures that spring from this most feminine expression. it worked. much love and hope. pj

It's a lot like math: One you add and the other you subtract.
