why do fingernails start curling down?

About six months ago one of my nails started to curl down. I thought it was from hours of being pressed against the computer mouse. Now all of them are doing it (but not the thumbs). I always had strong long nails. They've had like little ridges on them, lengthways, for as long as I can remember, at least 30 years, so I don't think the curling is related to that. Does anyone know what is causing the curling?

Update:

I lost a lot of weight 3 years ago, but this curling started after I started to go back to my normal weight. I do have emphysema.

Update 2:

someone in health-general said I should clip them more often!! all good answers here though

This can be due to respiratory problems. Do you suffer from Asthma or anything like that that you know of?

Inflammation sometimes comes out on the nails when you have a long term respiratory problem and causes them to curl. You should go and see a doctor to be on the safe side.

if your nails are thin then it might be a condition called Eggshell Nails which are thin, white, and curved over the free edge. The condition is caused by improper diet such as iron deficiency, lack of b12 in diet etc. internal disease, medication, or nervous disorders. I suggest you research more about this, take vitamins or go for a checkup. It could also be genetic. Your mother or grandmother might have curling nails. Another reason might be that your nails are dehydrated. Some city water contains chlorine therefore it dries out the nails. proper nail hygiene could help, there are special creams and shampoos.

I cannot tell you why your nails are curling because there are so many reasons but i would have to ask you a lot of questions to get to the root of it. Briefly though, the nails represent our body, mind, emotions etc... When we have lines and bumps in our nails we can look back at when the nail was forming to see that there was some kind of change in our life. severe stress can also cause cracking and splitting, curling up and down are signs of emotional distress, are you more aggressive? little ridges that run the length of your nails show malnourishment, vitamin e, silica, and collagen should be increased in your diet. Most people i see with nails that begin to curl downward are being suppressed by there relationships, and are usually going through menopause. Like i said earlier there are many factors. I hope this can narrow it down for you. It sounds to me that you just may need a spiritual retreat. Look inside yourself, and don't ignore the voices, they are there for a reason.

    Peace be with you!

i know what causes them its lack of care on your nails you may not know it but your nails need just as much attention as your hair and if you don't take care of them they will start curling down and turning yellow to fix your problem you should use a nail filer 2 times a week (tuesday and thursday) you should also start clipping them more often so they won't be as thin and so they won't curl past the nailbeds! hope that helped

  • My nails have been curving under at the tip for what seems like eons. I heard it was from some internal disease but I couldn't remember what system was supposedly affected. Thank you to everyone who imparted the wisdom concerning respiratory problems. I never thought this would be the reason for my problem, but since I have COPD and emphysema, it all seems to fit. Thanks again for the info.

short neat nails are nice and also neat. I dont like long nails because dirt can get under them and it look nasty

its digusting and gross when somebodys nails tend to be all chewed up to the finish.

Small is a lot better! Long nails are called "ghetto claws" for a reason. They make you look like no-class trash.

The nail grows slightly faster on the top than on the bottom. It get a little longer a little faster on top, forcing the nail to curl. It's constrained by the nail bed on the bottom and that slows the growth rate a bit on the bottom.
