What do you think about how the war in Afghanistan is progressing?
After we invaded Afghanistan in 2001 I assumed we would use the awesome might of the US military to kill terrorists, control the main cities and build a western type country there. I knew it would not happen overnight and we have made some progress to be sure. However, I did not think seven years later we would still be engaged in skirmishes with the Taliban with as weak of an Afghan government as we have now.
Progressing toward eliminating those who attacked us on 9/11. You can talk about an oil pipeline all you want but the U.S. was attacked on 9/11 and thus, we have the right and duty to counter attack to protect our security

I followed the conflict since 2001.
It was an awful quagmire and the Iraq occupation was designed to divert from it, which was extremely successful.
Now, bush is trying the same trick again, this time averting further scrutiny of the Iraq quagmire with the focus on Afghanistan.
The public is extremely gullible.
Excuse me, I like to vomit now

That was the folly of this administration. They underestimated their opponent and they are paying for it now. These are the same people who thought we would be greeted as liberators in Iraq, so it is no suprise that they thought the Taliban would be easy to beat away in Afghanistan. I think that a lot of people in the Bush Administration when we went to war had this idea that we would go into these countries and the citizens of Iraq and Afghanistan would stand behind us and support our efforts. We wern't greeted with the enthusiasm that they thought we would be.

Progressing? Progressing toward what, having McDonalds and Disneyland in Kabul?
I have yet to hear a single cogent reason for the US military to be there... except for the possibility of securing the route for a proposed oil pipeline. Fighting the Taliban? WTF is that about?

It is not going well... it is actually worst than Iraq in some measures (that is a real, unified insurgency built of the deposed government)... and it has a bigger Al-Quaeda presence than Iraq and can hide in Pakistan at will.
On the plus side, the dangers there are shared by NATO troops and commanders.... and it does not have the tribal divisions that Iraq has.
