help with thai visa?
My husband and I have recently purchased a 'Round the World' ticket and our first stop is Bangkok .
We are planning to stay for a month or so in Thailand and then travel down through malaysia to catch our next flight out of Singapore .
Was wondering which type of visas we need to get, as on the Thai 30 day holiday visa you need proof of flying out of THAILAND ... of which we are not doing!
I have just wrote to the Thai consulate about the matter and they wrote back imediatley with 'Most likely you need to get the tourist visas single entry'
Most likely is not really doing it for me to be honest.... i need to know DEFINATELY... i cant get a straight answer out of the consulate so i thought you guys could help!!

If your from one of the countries listed in the following web site you do not need proof of leaving this is called a tourist visa exempt entry that is good for 30 days at no fee
http://www.mfa.go.th/web/2482.php?id=2490
The other type of visa is a visa on arrival that is good for 15 days and does require a fee this does required a return ticket (see the web site for countries) http://www.mfa.go.th/web/2482.php?id=2490

If you are staying in Thailand less than 30 days then go the visa waiver route (30 days) - there is no such thing as a 30 day holiday visa..the 30 days you talk about is a visa waiver i.e. you can say in Thailand for a period not exceeding 30 days....you will get this on arrival in BKK, provided your nationality is on the visa waiver list of countries.
You have proof of on-ward travel from Thailand, you dont need proof of flying out of Thailand to get a 30 day visa waiver.
Suspect the Thai consulate is telling you you need a tourist visa because this you have to pay for the visa (ie they want the money)
Even if you intend staying longer in Thailand, no big deal, take a run over to Cambodia, so see Angkor and come back to Thailand and you will get another 30 days (you can do a max of 90 days in a 6 month period - 3 X 30 day "visa runs"

As long as you're from a country that is allowed the 30 day visa exemption it's 99.9% certain that you won't be asked to show an onward ticket. Officially, you're supposed to have a return or onward ticket, but on dozens of trips into Thailand on a 30 day visa exemption I have never once been asked to show a return ticket nor have I known anyone that has. As long as you look presentable and don't appear to be someone that will overstay illegally you won't be asked. If you plan on staying longer than 30 days, then getting a 60 day tourist visa is advisable. In the very unlikely event that you are asked, revealing your travel plans and showing your ticket out of Singapore I'm sure would suffice. Don't worry, you won't have a problem.

The country you come from will determine how many days you can get at the airport for free. http://www.retire-asia.com/visathai.shtml
For instance, if you are from the US, UK, Canada and many EU countries you may be able to get a free 30 day permission stamp in your passport. Just leave Thailand before that time runs out. Same countries can get a free visa on arrival for Malaysia too.
As far as having proof of departure, I have never been asked to produce "proof" even though I have almost always had a return ticket. Many backpackers arrive in Thailand and then head over to Laos or on to Vietnam and never fly home from Thailand. You do have a return ticket from the last country on your RTW ticket don't you? You do have sufficient money to support you on your holiday - right? If so then you shouldn't have a problem.
For more details on Thai immigration you can check this forum out. http://www.thaivisa.com/forum/Thai-visas-residency...
For Malaysia you may qualify for a free visa on arrival for that country too. http://www.travelmasti.com/international/malaysia/...
Have a nice holiday.
